Ok so we all know of the classic 80's Hasbro toy/game "Rock'em Sock'em Robots" a game that seem fun at first fun for 3 days until it gets old and boring. Flash Forward at least 20 or 40 years later into the future since Hasbro's robots in disguise reaches a all time Million and their real american heroes gets a million, They talk to their new friends Paramount/Dreamworks into making a movie with a real compelling story. They tried but due to script arguments and no real way to make a good story for the Bots so the movie was scrapped, but Paramount never gave up so instead of basing their new movie idea on another story from a 60's or 50's show "The Twilight Zone" about human boxing died out and Robot boxing is in. So a script was made and the cast was made with Hugh Jackman as the main character and The director of the Night At The Museum series Shawn Levy and Sugar Ray as one of the main robots Atom. So the trailer of the movie is release during the events during the events of Comic Con and Paramount released a teaser Trailerand even mixed up the Photos with Dark of the moon. So as usual, People on Movieweb and certain family members and friends critically panned the Trailer but Monkey boy never gave up on the movie because I saw potential in the movie because it seem like a sweet combination of "Never Back Down", "Rocky", "Rocky Balboa" and the popular Billion dollar movie franchise "TRANSFORMERS". So, a couple of months later They released more trailer for the movie and tv spots and some users and family quickly change their opinions. Well it's early October and on the 7th I saw this with a couple of friends. As I watch the movie it, I felt a amazed because my expectations reached to all time high and the pandemonium of this clever movie has proven it's a true classic for everyone and as well this generations Rocky. So let's skip to the review..........
The movie revolves around Charlie Kenton played by Hugh Jackman who is washed up boxer who almost became a boxing champion but lost it when people wanted more Carnage and more brutal fights which spawned in Robot Boxing. Couple of Years later Charlie isn't good at robot fighting because if your robot lose to a bull you openly suck, Charlie learns he has a son from His Ex-girlfriend named Max Kenton played by Dakota Goyo. While looking for spare Robots parts Max finds a 3rd generation robot with a rare function which is "Shadow Boxing" which is used to mimic the moves of any fighters. Now, with the help of Max and Atom, Charlie can get the redemption he needs if he needs to get back to the top.
The plot/Storyline is pretty much a clash between Transformers and Rocky because you get this feel of redemption and glory while watching this movie you can see each character looking for something to prove themselves and you root for them to reach their unreachable goal but performing these goals with Robots that beat the flying f*ck out of each other. The movie is set in a borderline futuristic world and they didn't try to over future it like hover cars and holograms to make it too futuristic and even though the movie will often and as well quietly reference it's own future technology as if its a comedy but it became annoying at certain points. The movie will often references other boxing movies or fighters or even games (Once referencing Rock'em Sock'em Robots) but at points it did get annoying and I did say "Ok you could stop with the many references!".
The acting in the movie was on point I say this because each actor makes their character seem real and when they interact with one another and as well the robots which makes the movie some what enjoyable to watch them interact with each other. This kid Dakota Goyo ( who's name sounds like a f*cking Japanese robot) is one of the best young actor I've seen at his age because he was one of my Human characters in the movie because his character bring the human side of the movie and He seems to help balance it out with his interactions with Hugh Jackman and the main robot Atom, but there are times where he over does it and you feel he needs to stop a certain points. Hugh Jackman plays the typical Washed up boxer in these type of movies and at first I admit you don't like him because he seems like a dick to the point he buys his own son so he can spend the money on a robot but when you hear why he's like this and why he's fighting to be back on top you realize that he sort of a cool guy and just going through a tough time in his life which we all know a character *Cough*Max and Atom*Cough* will help him reach his redemption and as well get back to the top and the movie does a good job of not overly selling his character like most movies like this does. Evangeline Lilly who plays Charlie's cliche love interest who's the female character who father once Coached Charlie, The movie seem to at points try to crowbar her character in the movie and even try to make her act as the human side of the movie but we all know it's the kid and the robot.
The Special Effects in the movie is pretty much Transformers minus the explosions and lasers and Chicago being burned to a fiery crisp. Mostly the robots are animatronic but when they start boxing you can see the special effects in the movie. When the robots start fighting they seem real and sometimes I get chills when they are fighting. Famous Boxer Sugar Ray plays the main robot Atom he makes his fighting seem real to me. When you see Atom they try to pull of Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes on me with when they try to give Atom human like emotions him because of his "Shadow Function" which i explain it helps him mimic moves of people, he seems to have human emotions because of his function when someone tilts their head in front of him he tilts his head to show he has emotions even the movie gives you hints where Atom actually has emotion with his interactions with Max and as well at certain points without his shadow function (When he picks up Max and Slowly tilts his head as he can understand Max and When He gets borderline knocked out Max runs to him yells at him to wake up and Atom responds) even it could be cool to see Atom show real emotion which would made the movie more likable .
The Director Shawn Levy who at the last minute was chosen to Direct this movie and all his interview he claims he wanted to make it a Rocky movie with Robots and he succeed in that with that concept and I think if Bay won't come back for TF4 Paramount will get Levy to direct the movie.
The score in the movie was orchestra based but it was barely used because it was out shined by other songs like Til' I Collapse By Eminem Ft Nate Dog, Fastlane by Badd Meets EVIL and Give It A Go by Timberland and Veronica.
So if you in the need for a heavy boxing movie I strongly recommend this movie because its a good movie and it deserves it's headline of being a good movie robots as the main boxers and if there's a sequel to this I hope they can make Atom be a little more human with his emotions. So people go see this movie because you would be entertained and besides do you want to see a movie about a town that bands Dancing?!
