THE NO-BUDGET DIARY 04 : I FIGHT PIRANHAS
We wrapped principal photography in one day. Two location changes. Five female actors and 6 male actors filled out the cast for the three scenes. Shot with only three crew members and at a cost of $22.00.
Producer, writer, director and DP, it’s hard to write this blog from one point of view. I mean I started writing I Fight Piranhas on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2008. Sometimes I think it’s my most finished piece of writing while other times I can’t help but see the major influence Tennessee Williams has had on this 100 page script.
After Sarah H agreed to produce Atlantic Blues I immediately proposed to finish the remaining short stories from HELP! I’m Being Eaten By A Broken Sticker. Story #3 was three scenes in length. Essentially two conversations wrapped around a musical flashback scene aimed to illustrate how the characters first met. Despite pulling off Atlantic Blues I decided not to be so bold mainly because the lyrics sucked to my little musical. Instead it left me with the opportunity to select a scene from I Fight Piranhas to fill the void.
PREPRODUCTION
I Fight Piranhas required 2 locations and 11 acting parts. Three of the parts were reprised by members of the Atlantic Blues cast. Tanar Repchull as Sean Jones, Sidley Cogswell as Mouse Jones and Jon Bacon as Bliss Tips. One role we had to recast was Catherine French previously played by the wonderful Alison Tucker who has since become a free spirited globe trotter.
For the new cast Tanar Repchull and Sarah H hit the net hard looking for actors willing to work for free on the weekends. In walked Jen Shepherd, Denise C, April, Aaron Karney and Chris Murphy. Chris Hubley who played Floyd Blues took his turn playing Jimmy Double X Foxx.
Production was scheduled to take place June 1, 2009 in Spryfield and downtown Halifax. Our only crew member not named Sarah H and I was the amazing multitalented and polite to a fault Fishy Neil.

POST PRODCUCTION
Editing again fell on Sarah and I. We cut the first print in one day. And then the audio track was exported so Sarah could work on the soundtrack. Her work with music has been as valuable as the script itself as she was able to save a lot of audio problems with ATLANTIC BLUES with her score and themes.
