Mr. Lord of the Rings himself is back directing another filled movie with huge visual effects. But can Peter Jackson turn a popular book into a good movie?
The lovely bones is about a young energetic 14 year old Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan) who was murdered on the way home from school by a psychopath George Harvey (Stanley Tucci). After the death of Susie, the father Jack Salmon (Mark Wahlberg) tries to fit the pieces of his daughters death, and the falling apart Abigail Salmon (Rachel Weisz) moves away to clear her mind. While all this is happening Susie is in the in-between life watching over her family. I really enjoyed this movie, at times it showed some really great emotional scenes that will make you cry,Then at times the movie had comic relief, witch you cant have in a really big emotional movie like this. Really mad no scenes, and I really show no respect for it, I really hate that about this movie. Saoirse Ronan really held up good as the lead actress in the movie. I wouldn’t say that she cared this movie because I thought Stanley Tucci, and Mark Wahlberg were really good in the movie, but she surprised me on how good she really was. Stanley Tucci was another one of the actors that surprised me, he played the psycho killer very odd, mysteries and creepy, Every time you see Tucci on screen you feel the creepiness out of him, you even know that he’s not a very straight guy, and that he is fucked up in the head. I don’t want to take any credit away from Saoirse Ronan, but I think the best performance in this movie is Stanley Tucci. Mark Wahlberg was another actor that had a strong performance, and latley his movies have really sucked, 2007 (Shooter, We own the night), 2008 (The Happening, Max Payne). So as of right now mark wahlberg has hit rock bottom, and I know he has talent, but he just needs to pick better roles. Before I seen this movie I found out that Mark Wahlberg was going to play the dad, now I was thinking there's no way that he’s going to do good as the dad. but after watching his performance, he was actually good. Now Ive been hearing from other people that also seen this movie, and most of them say that he had a sort tone voice most of the movie, witch he does for some parts of the movie, but honestly I think that’s how the director wanted him to act, specially the type of role that he was playing. I have to mention a scene that was one of the best scenes in the movie, and that seen was were Mark Wahlberg, and Stanley Tucci was face to face in Stanley Tucci’s backyard, and that scene was very intense. While watching it you really have no clue on what you think is going to happen. Very good chemistry between Wahlberg, and Tucci in that scene.
There were a lot of reasons why I liked this movie, first reason was the performances were very good in the movie. Saoirse, Tucci, and Wahlberg were all very good. Specially Stanley Tucci. There were a couple of very good intense scenes that make you at the edge of your seat, like the scene with Wahlberg and tucci, another scene was when the younger daughter of Wahlberg breaks into the house of Tucci, that scene was done very good and very tense. Last is the special effects of the heaven. The heaven scenes were very very beautiful, and actually makes you feel good in sad. now after mentioning the good things about the movie I will go ahead and mention the bad things. first is the comic relief that Susan Sarandon had. About an hour in the movie Sarandon comes to the parents house so she can help out because Rachel Weisz character cant handle the death of her daughter. So Sarandon comes in and brings some comic relief in the movie that really does not need any comic relief, specially for the type of movie this is. I also thought that there should have been more scenes with Mark Wahlberg trying to figure out who killed his daughter, because those scenes that they did show were very fun to watch, and also very intense. Last thing I hate about this movie was that it really did not follow the book very well. Now it doesn't really bother me that much, it just was really annoying at times.
Overall The Lovely Bones was a good movie that had some really good performances, and really good intense drama scenes between the actors. But the movie was not perfect, but really what movie is.
