PC gaming's main significant advantage over consoles is customization and ability. I can change out my PC hardware and upgrade parts any minute of any day, but doing that on my Xbox would void my warranty and could get my system banned from live. Also let's face it, the PC usually offers more content per multi-platform game than consoles.

Examples of recent:

Skyrim: I can get Alduin's shout, hell, I can even fly around as Alduin. I can use mounted combat, I can use guns, I can hotfix nearly any bug I run into on the spot and not wait for patches. Mods are just great, and I can only think of a few console games allowing them from off the internet.

Battlefield 3: 64 players vs 24 players on console. Bigger maps, quicker patches, free DLC, along with the usual better graphics and FPS. If Dice had been smart and allowed BF3 mod tools, the maps would be even better and bigger too.

Not hating on a console, but for me, I won't be buying the next generation. Not until MS and Sony treat them more like actual computers and not toys. Maybe if the console exclusive titles were better.

Normally I just post information to inform Spill members about games, but I have to come in and argue used games. Not just as a player, but as someone in the industry. Consoles will one day no longer have discs and everyone will have to get used to this fact. Will GameStop and other game stores be around, no they won’t. GameStop has been hurting the game industry by selling games for $60, earning their 15%-20% per game (depends on the production company) and then when the person brings the game back to the store, GameStop buys it from the person for $20. Then they jack the price up to $55 and sell it to someone in the store and say why you should buy the new game for $60 when you can pay $5 less. The consumer does take the hit, but the blame is on stores like GameStop. GameStop employees (most of them) try to talk you into buying games that are normally terrible. They have to sell you a game along with a warranty or they lose their job. They don’t care what game it is as long as they sale it. A game producer I know who used to work in marketing for GameStop told me once “Kids don’t know shit and district and regional managers don’t care about the game and most don’t even play them. They want to make sure your making the company money. So employees are told to sell everything and are informed not to tell people a game is bad.” I’m sure at some point you have been in a GameStop and they have tried to recommend a game to you that is terrible or you have overheard them telling a parent to buy a game for a kid. Several production companies have said numerous times that if we can eliminate used games we can knock the price down and earn the same amount of money. Without the cost of the middle man (GameStop, UPS, FedEx, disc manufacture, and box manufacture) the games would cost an easy $30 new. By making the new systems have a feature similar to Steam people would only have to worry about the system owner (Playstation, Microsoft, Nintendo), the production company and the game developer. Another item that is good is that with no more used games means that developers can focus more on better games and not have to make horrible games. Look at THQ, they have had issues for years not making money on kid’s games and making money on big budget tittles. Naturally since they had extra money they had to put it into the game developers that made the kids game in order to pay the team. As far as hype being lost on games it would happen, but it wouldn’t affect the game very much. Hype would still be there, look at the guy who mentioned seeing the Bioshock trailer. Not to mention people go to several gaming websites, receive magazines, read blogs, use Spill.com, and listen to friends.

For those of you that use Steam, you should be aware of the sales that go on all the time. The same thing would happen for a console that didn’t play discs or used games. Not to mention publishers don’t sit in a room and think of ways to piss you (the gamer) off. They have focus testing, sociologist, economist, and accountants to find all of this information for them.

The real question is; would you rather see an end to used games and a significant decrease in the price of a game or would you rather have high prices on games and GameStop screwing the customer over.

Freelancer and Vampire - The Masquerade: Bloodlines. Two games that will never get sequels, and deserve them. Badly.

Holy shit Jeff mentioned Freelancer right after I typed that up. Fucking awesome.

Putting Final Fantasy X, one of the worst of the franchise, on par with Knights of the Old Republic?

Comment by Alex Thompson on April 6, 2012 at 3:03pm

Speaking of Aliens games, I saw this for the first time yesterday and lost my mind:

It looks so beautiful, fun, and actually scary... I might actually pay full price to get this when it comes out (I've said this many times and by the time it comes out bills are due or my interest has faltered a bit).
