Comment by Prometheus on June 6, 2012 at 2:42pm Uh Oh it seems as if my post sparked some conversation about My Little Pony. I just wanna say thanks to Full Time Anthropologist for not being an asshole about the subject. It seems all to easy to hear the title then just chalk it up to a bunch of grown men like a Little girls show. I am a child of the 90's and I grew up with the Powerpuff Girls and I didn't mind a trio of superhero girls kicking ass against Mojojojo or HIM! Maybe it's cause their pony's maybe if they were horses it'd be less "girly". I don't let the color of pink, rainbows, or pony's keep me a way from a funny show. That's what it is to me a show I get a lot of laughs out of, same as Adventure Time or Regular Show. My first post was just saying their is a reason MLP has such a huge following. I'd love for Cyrus to be able to watch the Brony documentary whenever it comes out on Remote Viewing and hear his opinions then. Luckily the documentary already got it's budget from Kickstarter http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/257527888/bronycon-the-document... It might be enlightening for some of you out there!
Comment by Mark R. on June 6, 2012 at 1:38am I think it's less offensive than Obsidian who (I'm generalizing as I'm not very familiar with comics) mentally ill and part demon or something. I'm not offended by Obsidian, in fact he seemed kind interesting, but people can take anything the wrong way. But I agree it would have been interesting with an ethnic character, or one that people actually knew about. It's kinda weird choosing Alan Scott since he's more known to an older crowd and what's the point of retconning an old school character like that, you can't even say he's a late in life type of guy since he's young now. All in all, while encouraging, could've have been better, but could've been worse I guess...
Comment by Harris on June 5, 2012 at 9:43am There are a lot of problems with "revealing" that J'onn's gay. To start with, it takes away from the impact; he's a goddamn space alien shape changer, gender's just an illusion to him, so no shit he's gay, straight and everything in between.
The other is the SEVERELY unfortunate subtext that would come with it: "being gay means you're less human than everyone else."
As far as such things go, picking a character whose powers are external - a power ring, in this case - helps negate the idea that he's not straight because whatever gave him his powers also "messed up" his sexual identity.
I do wish they'd chosen an Earth-1 character (since Earth-2 "doesn't count" in the eyes of most readers) personally. Retconning Kyle Rayner or Guy Gardner would've been interesting. Static and Blue Beetle would also have added some interesting story potential as well because then not only are you talking about a gay superhero but also the issues that come with being gay in an ethnic groups that have profound antipathy towards homosexuals.
Comment by Mark R. on June 5, 2012 at 3:16am I'd actually think it'd be cool if the J'on J'onnz turned out to be gay, sincerely. But that thought went away the moment I remembered what was his "title". (I grew up watching Justice League and they almost never used his moniker) I wonder if that was actually a consideration that they scrapped because of the name. Because logically he's prominent enough to make an impact and yet not as crucial as to where you'd get weirdos claiming they're raping their childhoods or whatever. On a not so serious note it would be amazing if they did a David Bowie cameo where they were secret lovers and he inspired Ziggy Stardust.

Awww... we've offended the Bronies. We're heartbroken. It'll never happen again. Promise.
(by the way, My Little Pony is a terrible show.)
Ok, never again AFTER that.
Comment by Tom on June 4, 2012 at 1:10pm Hey cyrus I have a suggestion for what you could call your new home. What about Castle Blog, like Castle Black from game of thrones. Because you’re defending the league from far away against the wildlings on the other side of the not Austin part of Texas. Whilst also putting funny stuff on the internets
Comment by The Dubya on June 4, 2012 at 12:34pm Cyrus THANK YOU for saying what I'm always trying to tell folks about "Oh everything was soooo much better back then and everything today sucks wah wah cry cry blah blah!"
There was just as much stupid commercialized processed bullshit "back then" as there is now. Likewise there's still plenty of great movies/TV shows/music/etc. today just like there was however long ago. The main difference is that you're now old enough to have that filter turned on and go "Oh, I now notice this kind of sucks" rather than to just take it at the carefree face value as you did as a kid. And I can't stand people that use nostalgia as an excuse to act like cynical elitist pricks.
There's that great quote from Midnight In Paris that I love and pretty much says it all: "Nostalgia is denial - denial of the painful present... the name for this denial is golden age thinking - the erroneous notion that a different time period is better than the one ones living in - its a flaw in the romantic imagination of those people who find it difficult to cope with the present."
Like they were talking about even with relationships at the beginning, you just gotta take the good AND the bad, not just cherrypick the good to make yourself feel better than everyone else. Times change, iconography changes, and your perspective changes. And that's about the end of it. You don't have to like it, but if you could please refrain from acting like a pompous whiny bitch about it, that'd be lovely.
Comment by Kamron Rucker on June 4, 2012 at 11:48am I actually liked that they pronounced Aang's name correctly in the movie. That was the only thing I liked to be honest. I had some girl behind me literally 'correcting' the movie EVERY time they said his name. If you make a show based on another culture (or several), you do it properly. They have a calligraphy checker on the show who makes sure things are properly rendered, you're telling me it's too hard to pronounce a character's name the way it's meant to be? So I applaud M. Night for that. And I applaud the production designer's decision to make the arrows into actual symbols, I thought that was brilliant.
