The Latest (and WORST) "When Celebrities Attack!"

Celebrity rampages are nothing new. We're all still buzzing about Christian Bale's tirade (personally, I can't listen to it enough) and all the greats by Michael Richards, Alec Baldwin, Lily Tomlin and Bill O'Reilly are still out there on the 'net for you to relive whenever you want (click on their names if you want to right now).

This doesn't even cover the likes of Martin Lawrence running up and down the streets brandishing a pistol. And then there's all the child actors who's lives went so awry and ended in incarceration or drug-induced death. The cast of 'Diff'rent Strokes' alone earned a week's worth of 'E True Hollywood Stories'.

But of all of them no one---NO ONE had a story that ended as tragic and horrific as Travis Herold.
Travis Herold was also a child star who appeared in commercials for Old Navy and Cocoa-Cola, made an appearance on the "Maury Povich Show" and took part in a television pilot. Except for minor incidents he lived a quiet life until he turned 15-yeras old.

Suffering from Lyme disease and doped on Xanax, Travis savagely attacked a 55-year old woman, gouging out her eyes and ripping of her nose and jaw. Travis' rampage didn't end until he was stabbed several times by his owner and shot several times by police where he eventually died from the gunshot wounds.

I should mention at this point that Travis was a 200lb. chimpanzee.

Travis was well-known around Stamford, Connecticut because he rode around in trucks belonging to the towing company operated by his owners. Police have dealt with him in the past, including an incident in 2003 when he escaped from his owners' vehicle in downtown Stamford for two hours. Officers used cookies, macadamia treats and ice cream in an attempt to lure him, but subdued him only after he became too tired to resist.

At the time of the 2003 incident, police said the Herolds told them the chimpanzee was toilet trained, dressed himself, took his own bath, ate at the table and drank wine from a stemmed glass. He also brushed his teeth using a Water Pik, logged onto the computer to look at pictures, and watched television using the remote control, police said.

"There was no provocation that we know of. One thing that we're looking into is that we understand the chimpanzee has Lyme disease and has been ill from that, so maybe from the medications he was out of sorts. We really don't know," police Capt. Richard Conklin said. "He's been raised almost like a child by this family. He rides in a car every day, he opens doors, he's a very unique animal in that aspect. We have no indication of what provoked this behavior at all."

Travis and his mother/owner Sandra Herold

It should be noted that Travis' chimpanzee mom, Suzy, was gunned down in 2001 by a teenager after she and two other primates escaped their Missouri ranch and went on a spree of attacking cars and dogs.

There were reports of the chimpanzee used in the Speed Racer movie attacking actors and in March 2005 St.James Davis barely survived a brutal chimpanzee attack at a California wildlife rescue center in March 2005 - but not before his nose and mouth were ripped off, an eye was gouged out, his left foot was mangled and most of his fingers and buttocks were devoured. He was in a medically induced coma for months and has undergone more than 60 surgeries since.

"I remember every bite, one at a time. I remember when I went to touch my face, my fingers looked really scary. I remember hearing someone say, 'Might as well just take him to the coroner's office,'" he said.
"I cried myself to sleep every night for a long time."

Oh crap!! That last photo s gonna give me nightmares.
No wonder they used CG animation for Space Chimps. *shudder*

The other problem is that despite being sick from Lyme's Disease he's also a wild animal, and Chimps are extremely calm and friendly until they reach their form of puberty, then they become extremely territorial and agitated by the slightest things.
Sorry I know I'm a little late on this blog post, but the chimp didn't need much provocation at that point, it's like having a pissed off horny 15 year old with the strength of 5 people who can't speak to tell you why he's pissed off and horny.
Bad shit happens is all I'm saying.

You're absolutely right. That 911 call was too chilling for me to post. It made me think of the Timothy Treadwell tape.

Hippos kill man more than any other animal (or at least in Africa).

I dont see why people are stupid enough to brind wild animals into your home and not see this comming , saying that a chimp is the closest thing to a human should make you more nervous not ease your mind.Any animal bigger than a dog belong in the wild , in a zoo or on my plate not as your roomate

Stephan please. They're apes, not monkeys.
Comment by Stephan on February 23, 2009 at 9:32pm
The monkey was going through puberty, he had all the inner aggression and raging hormones of a human teenager with 10x the strength.

Batotaku 13

Could be a viable solution, but be prepared for rampant bonobo on bonobo/actor sex...

Has anyone heard the 911 call from Sandra Herold? It's one of the most disturbing things I've ever heard. At first it sounds like a joke. As if Crank Yankers decided to go the 9th mile and actually dial 911 for one of their pranks, but it quickly turns into an atmosphere that made my heart skip a beat You can hear Travis rampaging in the background and Sandra pleading for them to shoot the chimp. She's in tears as she has to watch Travis devour this woman's face and hands. The fact that a chimp was living in rural CT is a wonder indeed. There needs to be legislation stating that if you're not a zoo or chimpanzee rescue animal center, you should not have a chimpanzee. Their strength and aggression is something, as you can clearly see, a force to be (or hopefully not to be) reckoned with.

And its really disgusting to know that these animals are being abused - and then people act surprised when they go apeshit (yes...pun intended). I don't know if Travis was violent outside the realm of typical chimp behavior, but the owner gave him a fucking Xanax.

Hit up youtube to hear the 911 call. It almost made me cry...
