The Kids are [Definitely Not] All Right

I walked out in the middle of this film. I'll tell you why later, but first i'll tell you the good parts of this film.

This film is about a family, with lesbian parents, who seek out the sperm donor for the two kids in the family. I was weary about this at first, because there's only a couple ways that you can pull that off and make it seem real. They succeeded in this regard. To me the story felt real and could actually play out that way.

The acting was great. The actors brought the film to life. There was some bit of humor, that could have very easily fell flat, but it didn't, because these actor were really determined to make it work.

The cinematography wasn't much to my liking. It wasn't bad, but it was just shot in a style that seemed off to me. to me, the camera angle was very weird at points and took me out of the film, making me think why would they would chose to have the camera there.

They way that this film was going, I was really digging it. I was even heading into the Full Price range for me. But they made a big mistake. Now here is the reason I walked out.

By the time I walked out, there had been at least 4 sex scenes. They weren't modest about it either they were full on showing everything, with no shame. There was even a male gay porn tape they showed twice. All this would be fine with me, if it were to serve a purpose that being modest wouldn't serve. But it didn't. They could have easily just showed the start and then skipped the rest, and it still would have pushed the story along just the same, but it was too much for my, and my christian instincts came in and I left. By the time I left a good 15% of the audience had left.

I would give this a RENTAL just just so you can go ahead and skip the bad scenes.

(Please not that I did not see the whole movie, so this rating is only for what I saw.)

@ Narcoleptic Sloth I agree, which probably means I'm a hypocrite, but I still agree. If one of the Spill Crew members said they walked out of, say, Transformers 2, because it was racist, I wouldn't blame them. Maybe "gratuitous" sex is the same thing to AnimaTroy, but it's not for me, so I guess I have to accept a few things from his reviews and ignore other things.

@ AnimaTroy With regards to your response to mikeOxibigg, I think there's a difference between shooting exploitive sex and shooting straight sex in a film. From the way I've heard this movie being discussed by other reviewers (and, trust me, it really kills me to talk about the film without having seen it yet), this movie seems to be striving to portray the couple like normal human beings, and normal human beings have sex, you know? In a sense, that gives it meaning and purpose. Depending on personal preference, that could further pull you into the film or completely take you out, but it doesn't seem the filmmakers' intention wasn't to turn you on or off (that would be closer to exploitation.)

Haha, way to twist words there Mike and make assumptions. thats very silly of you. and Im being quite kind with 'silly'.

There is not one format to review a movie. the spill crew bring in their one personal views and opinions every time they review a film, and this was my point. I enjoy their reviews because they do it like a normal human being, and not like a robotic Film Critic that has delusions of grandeur. they even state many times that they were biased towards or against certain films. And there is nothing wrong with that because it creates a more realistic review. The average movie goer is neither professional or detached. they will bring in their biases into the movie theater.

"Professionalism and detachment? What rule is it for movie reviewers to be Professional and detached? If people dont like this review/opinion, then write your own critique of the film instead of reviewing this review!"

What a silly thing to say. And I'm being quite kind with 'silly'.

A reviewer whose bias extends to the point of walking out of a film cannot be taken seriously: that was my point. "I hate the superhero genre, find Hollywood to be a corrupt system and the amount of money being spent on blockbusters completely ridiculous, now here is my review of 'the Dark Knight!" ....Please.

I've seen the film and was certainly not stimulated into debating its merits with someone who hadn't watched it through. Walking out of a film isn't a badge of honor for a reviewer; and a review like this (stating the reviewer's religious instincts and how he/she would have made the movie) doesn't invite discussion.

It's an op-piece. And that's all well and good, but if he's aiming to be taken seriously as a reviewer (which many folks around here are) I think my advice could help it. If not I'll still sleep a good night's sleep.

And in that same vein; you're agreeing and defending the reviewer's review without yourself having seen the movie and only for sharing the same "values" as the reviewer. Way to prove Armond White right on the state of film discourse.

I've said my peace on the matter. Peace out, yo.

I agree with this review on the subject of sex. And violence while Im at it.. If either of the two serve a purpose, either to move the plot forward, or to show some character development, then go for it. But if you have mindless violence/sex, thats just asking for trouble.

though I am surprised that this movie would have that kind of stuff in it. It looked to be an intellectually stimulating film.

@ mikeOxibigg- the gay elements of the film weren't the reason I left, that's not what made me leave. What made me leave was the exploitation of the sex. I left in the middle of the scene with strait sex in it. I'm not homophobic.

If anyone isn't against an exploitation of sex scenes, go see this film it would be a full price for you. But for me personally, I thought it was too much for me. I can't wait for the movie to come out on DVD, so I can skip those scenes, and finish the movie, because I really liked the parts of the film that were good.

@ jadekite22- I personally believe that they could have shoot the sex scenes a little more discretely, and still had the same effect to the movie.

I'm sorry dude but your review of the movie holds absolutely no weight here. It's not even a review of the film; it's an assessment of your experience: "I was enjoying the movie but then gay shit happened so I walked out"
.....how are we supposed to take this 'RENTAL' seriously?

There are reviews of the film out there that criticize the gay element (not just the sex but the entire dynamic) but they at least carry some critical weight.

If these reviews are practice for you in the hope of one day pursuing a movie reviewing career, you need to gain some professionalism and some degree of detachment, because no one is going to take something like this seriously.

P.S. For future references, homophobia (which is different from gay-bashing or intolerance) is NOT an ingrained part of the "Christian Instinct".

I'm not saying it's not okay to walk out of a film, but how can you judge whether the sex scenes added to to the film unless you sit through the whole thing? Not that this seems like a film that'll blow your mind with some sort of sex scene-related plot twist, but it also doesn't seem like exploitation either. Maybe it plays out later in the movie. I've never respected reviews from critics who walk out in the middle of a film since, well, it's their job, but you're not professional (that's not a knock on the quality of your writing, which is obviously quite good and I definitely look forward to more reviews) so I don't know how to react other than to ignore it and just see the film for myself. Sorry.

You personal preference should always inform your viewing decisions, so whatever. Sex scenes may be harder to accept in a culture where viewing a violent act on film is somehow more acceptable, I take P.T. Anderson's view of sex in the cinema, there are small intimacies present in sex that can give something to character. I still haven't seen the film, it rolls into my town next week, so I can't speak to this statement's aptitude in confronting this film's depiction of sex, but the truth is sex is a huge part of many adult's lives, and beyond personal preference a film that depicts a lot of sex crosses no ethical code of my own. Just know there are many great films that do feature prominent and explicit sex.
