This movie left me speechless. It was so good

A lot of people in my country, England, seem to stereotype Americans as dumb and ignorant, and this always gets to me because it's ignorant in itself to say this and generalise an entire country and its population but DAMN!

The number of people in this comment section complaining about 'White Washing' in this movie is, frankly, embarassing, especially from the Spill Crew, some of whom seem to be pretty well travelled to say the things they do.

Seriously stop equating Spanish with Mexican, they are two completely different countries, just because they share the same language does not make them anymore the same than Nigeria and Scotland, both of which have English as the national language.

Mexicans are a mix of Spanish and Amerindian peoples, mostly Amerindian, while Spaniards are Europeans from a completely different continent, and a far, far older country.

I clicked on the review expecting comments about 'white washing', but saying Ewan McGregor doesn't look Spanish...wtf...?

This review was horrible on many levels. So much ignorance that it got me really pissed. It seems Spill grew thinks that Mexican = Spanish. Well in reality Mexicans are about 50% Native American. People in Spain dont look like people in Mexico. George Lopez does not look Spanish. Speaking some language does not change your looks. Are Nigerians or Indians "white" because they speak English? This "race talk" was just total face palm to me. I understand that part of this ignorance is because America has some crazy racial classifications.

Also just to note that most tourists killed in the Tsunami were from Germany and Sweden (more than 500 each). 9000 foreign tourist were killed. Its true that they could have more locals in the film, but I mean lots of tourists were killed. Very few Spaniards were killed so in fact it made more sense to have North-European looking people in the lead roles. Just because most tourist killed looked like them.

Maria is very common name in Finland were I live. I just cant believe some comment you guys made. Unbelievable.

Other thing is that they could have had more locals in the films, but it might be that it would have made film worse because you can only tell one good story in one film - or film gets too long.

You know, people in Spain are actually white. McGregor and Watts could easilly pass as Spanish.

Comment by DoctorWitten on December 23, 2012 at 6:42am

This is a travesty! The studios are clearly showing racial vibes in their casting! cos we all know that Spaniards are darker and 'browner' than Ewan McGregor.  He looks nothing like any real Spaniard...oh wait.

That prequel Obi Wan Kenobi looking mofo is Xabi Alonso, one of the best Spanish football/soccer players around.so boom, there you go. And If you're thinking i picked him out cos he was the one famous Spaniard that had light features then no, i picked him out because he looks like Mr. McGregor. if i were to just provide an example of a blonde Spanish person then that would be even easier because, hell, 4 out of 11 of the Spanish players in their starting football team alone, are blonde. Modern Spain probably looks almost as blonde and blue eyed as modern France.

I agree they should have got the more common looking spanish type looking actors for the roles but it seems to get the story across so its ok.

Im mexican and people think im white in America people think latino is darkish looking when I went to mexico a few years ago my mind was blown walking through a mall I thought I was a rarity lol not true we are white to brown.

you guys do know that spaniards are Europeans as in white?

I saw Eastwood's Hereafter and I thought that was a decent enough insertion of the Tsunami so as not to have to endure 2 hours of it...Horrible disaster, yes, but if you're going to make a movie about it, might as well donate 100% of the proceeds to the families there who suffered the most by it. And you know that's not gonna happen.
