Vitriowl joined Adam Collins's groupAs we, the people that play video games and follow them, should all know by now, Modern Warfare 3 has revealed information about it's much scrutinized, much beloved multiplayer. Following the end of CoD XP I immediately went to YouTube to see some of the footage of the game and was more the less impressed with the tweaks and changes the great Infinity Ward had done in an attempt to freshen up it's tired online formula. What confused me though, was the amount of dislikes on EVERY SINGLE Modern Warfare 3 video. This was the same franchise that just two years ago, every trailer, leak, or minuscule amount of info was given out was carefully researched in an attempt to find out anything about the game. Now, here we are almost two years later and the sequel to that very same game is now getting bashed for not trying anything new, looking the same, being seen as an expansion pack etc. etc. etc. And to me, all that speculation is complete bullshit.
The argument that Modern Warfare 3 looks like complete trash compared to Battlefield 3 is a given. Modern Warfare 3 is running on a 2 year old engine and by today standards still looks pretty good compared to the crappy graphics of Homefront and the such. Battlefield 3 on the other hand, is perfecting Dice's Frostbite engine and basically pushing the Xbox to it's limits on how good games on that consoles can look. So all of the Battlefield fanboys proclaiming that their game looks 10 years better than Modern Warfare's really needs to shut the hell up, because honestly? It should. If it didn't Battlefield 3 wouldn't even be talked about as much as it is today.
Another argument that seems to be popping up lately is that Modern Warfare hasn't done anything to change it's online multiplayer. This is completely ludicrous. If we compared the features of Modern Warfare 2's online multiplayer to what has been confirmed so far in Modern Warfare 3, we can clearly see that Infinity Ward and co. are at least TRYING to change things up a bit. Now whether all these changes will be good or not, we won't know until the game is actually released. But things like the new point streak system, the new weapons upgrading system, the new and refined perks that are being put in, the removal of shotguns as a secondary weapon, and the addition of new game modes give me a good feeling that Modern Warfare 3's online multiplayer is going to be more like Cod 4 and less like the overpowered bullshit we had to endure with MW2. What I never understood about this certain argument though, was not that Call of Duty always had the same things in it's multiplayer, but the fact that the Battlefield competitive online has relatively stayed the same. There were basically no new changes from Bad Company 1 to Bad Company 2, and from what I've seen from Alpha gameplay of Battlefield 3, they're still no major changes.
To conclude my first blog post, I will say that despite this rivalry between Call of Duty and Battlefield fan boys, I will still be buying both games when they come out. And that Professor Jeff was right when he said that you really can't compare the two games because they're not the same. The only things that are similar is that they're both first person shooters and that they're both released in the Fall. And it's not like the two company's making these games hate each other. Robert Bowling, the community manager for Infinity Ward, played Battlefield 3 and said that he loved the game. Patrick Bach, the executive producer for Battlefield 3 has stated that the two games should not be compared to at all. So in the end, I guess all I can do is go back to watching my Modern Warfare 3 COD XP gameplay videos, and my Battlefield 3 Alpha gameplay videos and chuckle at the ignorance these fanboys have been showing for the past year. And it'll all just repeat next year.. SMH.
