Adding another in what is becoming a comically long list of Dracula projects in development, it was announced recently that the on-again-off-again 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' is, well, on again. The film will tell the story of the doomed voyage of the ship that carried Dracula from Transylvania to London in the original Bram Stoker novel. The film appears to finally be setting sail for real with Neil Marshall ('The Descent') at the helm. The script for 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' was written a decade ago by Bragi Schut ('Season of the Witch') and has tried, and failed, several times to leave port; at one point under the direction of David Slade ('Twilight Saga: Eclipse') and boasting a cast that included Noomi Rapace and Sir Ben Kingsley. 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' is currently being set up over at Millennium Films.
So yes, yet another Dracula film in the works, but to be fair this one has been trying to get made for a very long time. Still, in my opinion, it's quite possibly the least interesting conceptually of all the Drac films in development. Granted, there is something to be said for close-quarters horror, and a rickety old ship is certainly lacking in wide open spaces. Plus, Marshall proved how well he can create horror in tight spaces with 'The Descent.' However, the conceit here appears to be some dark mystery about what happened to the crew of the ship. Well we can tell you what happened, Dracula killed them all. I mean, how much more do you really need to delve into that particular facet of the story? Maybe I'm being short-sighted here.
What do you guys think? Could this film work conceptually? Is Marshall the right man for the job?

Comment by adam on May 15, 2012 at 8:57am this actully sounds interesting. Its the one portion of the novel, we really haven't seen on screen. Id watch this.
Comment by Santos on May 15, 2012 at 1:11am I like this idea. Yeah, so we know that Dracula wastes the crew. So what? We also know that he comes to London, seduces and literally drains some fine young ladies and is eventually killed. It's a story we're all very familiar with, but to make an entire movie out of a small, but still very important aspect of the story interests me.
Comment by movieartman on May 14, 2012 at 9:30pm This is Absoluty the only Dracula or hell Vampire related film in the works that i have any intrest in besides say underworld 5. i have a Lot of faith that this guy could do this tale justice, in the original Nosferatu it was the most creepy iconc segemnts from that film, and has sense sadly been mostly ignored in most other dracula adaptions.
a comic adaption of the story by IDW comics Death Ship: The Last Vogage of the Demeter released 2010 or early last year was really good
Comment by Jax Lander Darnerailey on May 14, 2012 at 8:07pm Yesss! I have been waiting for a story about the Demeter to happen. And any horror movie, you know there is the chance the are all going to die, but who says they have to follow the story? We still go see Dracula movies. Why? To see how they die.
Comment by VersaLife on May 14, 2012 at 7:54pm Could he do to vampires as he did with werewolves in his Dog Soldiers film? Yes, I have faith he could.
