Walt Disney/Marvel has just announced that next summer's highly anticipated superhero epic 'The Avengers' will now be offered in 3D in addition to 2D. While the official announcement was only just made, director Joss Whedon was apparently aware from the word go that the film would be post-converted to 3D. It was evidently the studio's plan from day one. He states that he had the format in mind the entire time he was filming. Whedon, obviously aware of the negative fan reaction this revelation might cause, has been quick to promise that the film will not be "obnoxious" with its 3D, and that it will only reinforce elements that would have flown toward the screen anyway given that this is an action film.
Part of me wants to rant and rail against the studio for this decision. Few films have been able to properly incorporate the 3D for which they shot, and still less have managed to even look passable with post-converted 3D. Plus, I'm sorry Joss, but it doesn't matter how much you were "thinking about 3D the whole time," if you aren't shooting in 3D, you aren't properly accounting for it. This was the first piece of news regarding 'The Avengers' that filled me with anything but excitement so the urge to flip out was strong. However, the fact is that no matter what the post-converted 3D looks like, we will still have the option of seeing the film in 2D. The studio is simply adding an additional viewing option, and not forcing us to see 'The Avengers' in 3D. Is it irritating that the studio planned on doing this all along but only just now let the rest of the world know? Sure. Will it keep me from seeing the film? Hell no. Do you guys think a post-converted 3D 'Avengers' could work?

Comment by TheNinjaMax on December 28, 2011 at 4:19pm Another post-production 3D conversion. Com'n, Hollywood. Nobody's gonna give a shit about putting 3D in your shot-in-2D film if they learn it was an afterthought. No wonder interest in 3D has been on a steady decline...

Comment by Richard Dempsey on December 28, 2011 at 10:17am Randy, my sentiment exactly. I think 3D adds so much to the tactile feel of everything from wood to water and further immerses me in the world the film is presenting. But this post nonsense is getting out of hand. Now we'll see all of the Star Wars movies, Titanic, Beauty and the Beast (and Lion King before it) again with this surface 3D splashed on it. And by the way, the trailer for BatB 3D looks horrendous. Line animation looks horrible in 3D.
Comment by Dezbert on December 27, 2011 at 8:07am I've seen 2 or 3 post conversion films they have all sucked donkey dick.
Comment by Spydah on December 27, 2011 at 8:03am This is the worst thing that can happen to a huge anticipated movie! It just means gratuitous "3D shots" that will waste time and add zero value to the movie.
KILL 3D!!!!
Comment by Microshock on December 27, 2011 at 2:39am If this is in IMAX, you KNOW there's no 2D option for this movie then. But if its just normal definition, then i'm going 2D.
Comment by randy on December 26, 2011 at 12:59pm I'm so sick of those post 3D shit, just foot the film in 3D if you want it to be.
Comment by ThatDudeWhoReviews on December 26, 2011 at 12:36pm Nope! 2-D for me!
Comment by Zeke on December 26, 2011 at 10:57am Why would I care as long as I can watch the 2D version..?
