Today a Georgian Luger died, during a practice round down the Luge track in Vancouver. The track is reportedly the fastest in the world, and some say, that perhaps its too fast. In fact many foreign athletes are complaining that they are not being given enough time to practice on the new track, and many have already crashed on their practice runs... one australian Luger says, " we're not test dummys.....we're human beings". And i whole heartedly agree with him.
Sports today has become so mingled with drugs and technology, one wonders does the athlete matter anymore? When did we loose the human factor in sports?
Imagine if you will a young man,a swimmer, who has trained his whole life to compete in the Olympic games, he is in the peak of his physical fitness, and in the prime of his life. He is ready to compete against his equals, and swim the race of his life. But joining this race is a new suite, that has been engineered to make you swim faster by 1/10 of a second. Suddenly the young man who dedicated his whole life for this one moment, a man who managed to attain such incredible dominion over his physical body, finds that he now swims not against another person, but a freaking shiny new suit.
This goes for all sports today, and here with this poor Luger, we see yet again, the example of how we are going too far, and testing the body to an extreme that is goes beyond its natural human capability. Records are broken, little by little, through hard work, discipline, training, focus, and dedication...their broken with raw human skill. Now technology is asking us to break records in Leaps and bounds...the reality is that the body just cant keep up with speed of technology. So i say why use bodies anymore? Why do we even need the athlete, their just too slow...Lets get a robot, stick a nations flag on it and send it on its way down a dangerous Luge track.
No wonder the first Olympians competed Naked!!! They understood, they new what sports really meant.
