Brandon Blaze joined VinnyLT's groupBerserk, considered THE Dark fantasy manga for a reason, it is highly beautiful fully realized world based on WESTERN mythology. The world fits in a few ways in anime tropes (The main character carries around a humongous sword, another lead is a pretty boy and could be mistaken for a girl, and there's a plucky sidekick, also a guy who always looks like he has his eyes closed) but it's very western made feeling, so much so it's like if Alan Moore did a graphic novel take on Lord of the rings every once in a while. As the title states it's the live action adaption movie I want to see made by a Western studio for many reason.
First the setting/cast:
Unlike most manga this is set Eastern Europe in the middle of a conflict of with people from Western Asia or at least equivalent to that conflict, meaning you need huge sets or to go international shooting, something Japanese Cinema is not widely known for and use in limited amounts. That's before you get down to cast which is a very diverse cast of people of all walks a life, some from different nations, so it'd literally be against the story to say 'this is an all asian cast'. Speaking of cast, the scale is another thing you got to deal with as some times Berserk likes to get fancy and show a HUGE battle. Your reponse may be: "Well they can always CG/green screen it can't they", they can green screen it however it may come off as looking kinda cheesy(I've seen some cheesy looking green screen out of Japanese films lately even high budget films), but it's possible, but to talk about CG.
Second the CG:
The Japanese and most Asian cinema don't have a great grasp on CG integration into live action, and for things like the battle against Zodd the immortal(Pictured left) is key to be on point. Not to mention the whole final scene of the original band of hawk gathered together, which is HUGELY impactful and should be done on the level of avatar if put to film. It's one of the times where I say Japanese aren't ahead when it comes to computer graphics, they make great art but I don't think they have that spark to even attempt to make it seem like it's actually in the room with a live actor. If you don't believe me watch the Deathnote films which has a Full CG Ryuk and while it was I believe 2008 when it was made it looks like something from Star wars episode Episode 2.
Third the west, as filmmakers, would understand it better:
Much like the big problem of previous anime adaptions is how the people who make the films dont get it, due to it working on very eastern concepts, The east wouldn't get the mythology behind Berserk as it's very dipped in European folk lore and fantasy concepts, thus some things would be lost if they attempted to adapt it. Berserk is a world where Trolls and golems, Mermaids, elements of demonic possession, cursed weapons and magic in general, is shown in the western sense and talked about similar tone as western folklore. As well as the in-depth western views of religion in the dark ages, witch/heretic burnings, views on Pagans(one character comes across a pagan orgy at point and it's explained to him what's going on a little). I do believe that an Eastern film maker could make this movie right but I'd put my money don't that a good western film maker could do it just as well.
Those are my thoughts on the subject, what are yours?
