Teaser Trailer For 'Monsters University'

Although 'Cars 2' proved to be less-than-stellar, I still have a lot of faith in Pixar's ability to craft sequels. I mean, the entirety of the 'Toy Story' franchise is outstanding. That's why I am super excited about 'Monsters University,' which is their followup to 2001's 'Monsters, Inc.' The film centers on younger versions of Sulley (John Goodman) and Mike (Billy Crystal) as they learn to be scary. The first teaser trailer has just landed online, and it's downright charming...as is most of Pixar's output. There are apparently "four versions" of the teaser on the film's Facebook page on which you can vote, but the only difference between them is Mike's punchline when Sulley pulls back the covers. This one was my favorite.Take a look at the teaser below and let us know what you think.

'Monsters University' is due out June 21st, 2013

I don't get it all people really want in Incredibles 2 and original properties but they give us this...ok.

@Fungusmonkey: Exactly. I'm not saying anything about the movie because this is simply a trailer from a company that usually has a "HA! I GOT YOU! Now watch this wonderfully crafted and imaginative film" but you pushed the button when you said Disney got into this, which is ironic because Disney used to do the same thing in the early days. And like I said, interesting character & story development can make this into a new and crafty execution of what was seemingly a simple story, but...ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I'll be the one to say it... this looks lame. Pixar has advanced in tech consistently throughout their films, but this just looks like the same re-heated assets, modified slightly and thrown together for a fast buck. It doesn't look particularly impressive.

Then we get to the story. In case anyone was wondering, they already had a backstory for the characters when they made Monsters Inc. Sully was actually the "nerd" character (early versions of his character in Monsters, Inc still had him wearing glasses) while Mike was more of the school bully / class clown. Early talk for this film sounded cool and like they were going to actually do something thematically deep. This just looks like your basic "Sully was the popular kid, Mike was the loser, they become friends because Sully looks past their social cliques to see him as a person" trope. In college. Another trope. With wacky pranks and hijinks. Tropezilla.

Ever since they merged with Disney it really seems like their focus on characters and story has mutated into a focus on merchandising and box office. :(

Mind if I wait with you?

@Exeedra, a prequel is a sequel. Monsters University still takes place in the same fictional universe, uses the same characters, and even has "Monsters" in the title. As soon as they decided to make a new film that continues the story in any way, it's a sequel. The term prequel just gives you an idea of when the story takes place chronologically.

Two years ago I would have been freaking excited for this. But after Cars 2 proved that even Pixar does not always get things perfectly, I shall proceed with caution.

I really enjoyed the first Monsters Inc. film. Hopefully this will live up to the first.
