Back in April it was reported that Dreamworks had scored the movie rights to EA's popular video franchise 'Need for Speed,' said to be one the most successful in the world. The script for the film version of 'Need For Speed,' would be penned by John and George Gatins who also brought us the screenplay for Shawn Levy's 'Real Steel.' So we know the movie will star a fleet of souped-up, super fast autos, but what about the human component? According to one source, Dreamworks is looking to Taylor Kitsch ('John Carter') for the lead role in the movie. No official offer has been extended, but Kitsch is said to be the frontrunner for the part. Kitsch has been quite busy this year, seeing not only 'John Carter' released, but 'Battleship' and Oliver Stone's 'Savages' as well.
Wow, an adapted property starring Taylor Kitsch? So Dreamworks wants this thing to fail right out of the gate? The guy's track record this year is so abysmal as to make me skeptical of the validity of this news story. Why would any studio be willing to gamble on someone who proved to be such an unreliable box office draw twice in one year? I mean no disrespect to Kitsch, but it's not exaggeration to say that both 'John Carter' and 'Battleship' failed to meet studio expectations; not to mention the latter being a floating pile of garbage. To be fair, I must say my faith in Kitsch was restored in 'Savages,' in which he turns in an intense and yet still undeniably human performance. However, I think the worst thing he could do right now is take on another big studio cash-grab like 'Need for Speed.'
What do you guys think? Would Dreamworks really offer this role to Kitsch? Would you want them to?

Comment by BlackMagic on July 26, 2012 at 1:35pm If they're doing a Need for Speed film, they should do something in the vein of Most Wanted with a race against the top racers, instead of one similar to Underground. Otherwise, you may as well do another Fast and Furious movie.
Comment by Andre Smith on July 25, 2012 at 10:31am Part of me wants to see this guy break the streak and have a hit. But the majority of me just cant wait to see how bad this movie will be.
You need either a strong narrative or a passable narrative with amazing visuals.
Good luck Kitsch.
Comment by NeoSpearBlade on July 24, 2012 at 10:53am The current state of NFS games are really heading back to it's roots as an arcade racing game, that is no car customization other than the car's default color. The only reason NFS Underground/Underground 2/Most Wanted 2006/Carbon/Undercover are popular is because EA wanted to earn some of the Fast & Furious money. I'll admit, at the time I didn't know this and I enjoyed playing those games but only after playing Hot Pursuit 2010 did I realize that the series should be about arcade-style racing with regular sports/performance/super/hyper/concept cars. Therefore, I am exited for the reboot of Most Wanted coming out this October. So if you want more of the Underground-style NFS (I'm looking at you Nick), go play those games as arcade NFS is here to stay since it's been announced that Criterion will be the developer for future NFS games.
Hmm? Oh yeah, about the movie. Sorry. ^_^'
I always thought that the plot of a NFS movie is about a secret underground (har-har) group of drivers who collect these cars and race them all over the world or something like that but really, the series started with no plot other than 'Your car looks so slow, you can't beat me even it I was [insert lame joke here] Oh, you think you can? Then prove it.'
NFS is all about the racing with extremely cool looking cars so as long as the racing scenes look awesome and badass, I will see this movie.
Comment by gorillahandz on July 24, 2012 at 9:23am Fuck it, why not? It is probably going to be a bad movie, anyway. They should just populate it with Fast and Furious lookalikes and go from there, since people will most likely confuse the two franchises anyway. Taylor Kitsch can play the part of Paul Walker.
Comment by BadAss Knives on July 24, 2012 at 9:17am Oh yeah, and I liked John carter.
Comment by BadAss Knives on July 24, 2012 at 9:16am I hope this doesn't ruin his career. I think he is good for starring in comic book and action hero movies. But this one seems kinda dumb.

If I was Kitsch, I'd run far away.
The Need for Speed games are not know for strong narratives, they are known for driving. Since you don't get to control the car during a movie, there simply won't be an appeal to the fans of the game. At best, you might get the gear head audience who are waiting for the next Fast and Furious movie.
Without a reliable built in audience, the next move the studios run to would be star power. On that front, does anyone know someone who would go to see a movie because Taylor Kitsch is in it? I certainly don't, and based on his box office returns, I'd venture say very few people do.
The problem here is Taylor Kitsch, much like Sam Worthington before him, is being thrust into all these big budget lead roles without having ever shown an audience that he can carry a movie like that.
Unless Kitsch doesn't think he can evolve into a decent lead, and feels he needs to grab the cash now while studios are dumb enough to offer it to him, I think he'd be better off looking for more varied roles a la Savages as opposed to big dumb action films. The guy is another flop or two away from pure insignificance in the industry.
