Review:
The first Men In Black is a great action comedy in the vein of Ghostbusters. Both Tommy Lee Jones & Will Smith work real well and this is the film that proved to me that there was a great future for Will Smith in terms of film. The special effects were impressive, the story worked, the jokes were hilarious, plus how do you forget that song...
Yeah, good old fashioned 90s nostalgia, has it really been 15 years?
Well, it's only been 10 years since Men In Black 2 was released and the basic consensus is that it's nowhere near as good as the first film, but then again, it's hard to make a sequel just as good as the first film.
A lot of people hate the sequel but I still like the second film. It has a lot of problems, it's an inferior remake of the first film, and it just felt unneccesary.
A lot of what I like about the second film comes from the special effects, which are still awesome, and the connection between Smith & Lee Jones, once again, they sell the film.
Men In Black 2 is not that great but I like it for the same reason I liked Ghostbusters 2, it's a fun summer film.
Now on to the third film and I have to admit, not only is this a great improvement over the last film but I really enjoyed the hell out of this film.
I had a lot of fun with this, this is the perfect example of good summer escapism entertainment.
This film doesn't insult the intelligence of its' audience like one other film released this month that gets my irritation to a new peak at how shitty it was....SERIOUSLY, WHO THE FUCK GREENLIT BATTLESHIP?
Okay, okay, happy place, happy place, talking about a good film here.
But yeah, I really had a lot of fun with Men In Black 3.
As usual, Tommy Lee Jones & Will Smith both work real well together and the special effects are at their best here for this series.
In addition, Josh Brolin's performance of the young K is so spot on, and everybody has been saying this, it's really like they went back in time and got the real Tommy Lee Jones from 1969 and brought him back for this film.
I also liked how they brought the whole Men In Black storyline full circle. The last 5 minutes of the film was done very cleverly to tie up all the films and bring them all full circle. I won't say what happens at the end but I was impressed with the way they tied it all up.
But the best thing that made the film work was that the film was not over 2 hours long. I've been complaining that blockbusters don't need to be 2 and a half hours long, (cough) Battleship (cough). And MIB3 managed to pull out a great story in just 1 hour and 46 minutes. They knew when to wrap it up and not overstay their welcome.
My complaints with the film start with the first 5 minutes, which I felt was underwhelming plus I knew every single thing that would happen. Plus, we get introduced to the most useless character in the film, who gets killed off within the first 5 minutes.
Secondly, as much as I liked Jemaine Clement in the film, I thought his character was not that great. It's the same problem the second one had, the villian wasn't all that threatening. In the first film, you bought Vincent D'onofrio as the villian and he actually had some really fucked up moments in the film. The second film's villian was really underwhelming because she really had the feeling that she didn't think her plan all the way through.
In this film, I thought Clement was doing the best job he could with a character who wasn't well thought out.
The other really big complaint I had was that there was no Will Smith song. I mean, Will Smith really couldn't step out of retirment from music once more to give us another song? Instead, we get Pitbull?
So, overall, I had a lot of fun with Men In Black 3, it's way better than the second one, it's a good time at the movies that fits the summertime. I give it a high
I also want to bring up the 6 minute preview for The Amazing Spider-Man, which is being shown if you see Men In Black 3 in IMAX or if you're at a Cinemark theater that has Cinemark XD, which is where I saw it.
I've been talking deep shit over the whole project. I don't like that they are doing a full fledge reboot of the character, the trailers haven't sold me, and I really don't like that costume, the mask seems way too fake and I hate that the feet on the costume looks like somebody painted their sneakers to match the feet in the comic books.
Despite the impressive cast and director on board, I was still not looking forward to the film and then I watched this preview.
Basically, the preview shows two different clips in full, one with Peter (Andrew Garfield) talking to Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) in the school and the other is Peter taking out a carjacker with his spider webs. And in-between, we get random shots for the film.
To be 100% honest, this 6 minute preview really got me excited for the film more than those trailers did. Those two scenes I thought were effectively done, the Spider-Man costume did look more impressive from what I was seeing, and the visuals for the little shots here and there were actually looking impressive.
So, now I'm actively looking forward to seeing this. I still have my doubts but this 6 minute preview showed me that the potential is there for something very entertaining.
The movie opens on July 3rd.
