Tarantino says 'Basterds' is Actually Longer, Not Shorter

Quentin Tarantino sat down with Variety to discuss his upcoming WWII film, Inglourious Basterds. Amongst many things discussed, Tarantino addressed the rumors that the Weinstein's asked him to shorten the film; calling them "lies" and he goes on to say that Basterds is actually a minute longer what was screened at Cannes.

On the rumors that he was asked to cut the film:
I’ve heard these rumors that the studios told me to cut out 40 minutes. These are complete lies. The movie is actually a minute longer, in running time, than it was in Cannes. It was 2:28, without end credits, and now it’s 2:29, or 2:32 with end credits.
On whether the actors would be down for a prequel:
All through the movie, Brad Pitt and Eli Roth just kept saying, “Prequel. Prequel.” Brad would say, “Let’s talk him into doing a prequel.” The guys love the idea. I’ve got the storyline. Then again, I was going to do all these animated prequels to Kill Bill. I didn’t end up doing any of those.
On whether Tarantino's commercial hopes are escalated with having Pitt as a star of the film
I’ve normally relied on my name for the most part. The hope is, I’ll bring my fans and he’ll bring his. Overseas, Brad’s following is intense, just crazy, but so is mine. The hope is, us working together, that’ll be a draw. I can honestly say though that if Brad Pitt wasn’t a star and I’d found him in the casting process, I would have lobbied for him to get this role.

What I remember most about the trailer, is thinking, this is a really good idea, I just hope to god it isn't cut like the trailer. Is that the music from 300? That's what it looks like the trailer is telling me, this is 300 in WWII, and I don't think even Quintin can pull that off. Still, I don't mind my war movies running on the long side.

It'd be interesting to see a prequel, but as QT says, it'll probably end up the way of the Vega Brothers, or that Kill Bill sequel with Copperhead's daughter setting out for revenge against The Bride.
It's probably for the best that he hops between new genres.
