Tarantino Discusses Potential Finale Of Alternate History Trilogy

Quentin Tarantino seems to be in a very specific mode right now, and that mode has him re-imagining history. Whether it be Nazi-infested Europe during World War II or the final days of slavery in the antebellum south, Tarantino has been leaving his mark on the past. Now that 'Django Unchained' has hit theaters, the question becomes, once again, what will be his next project? It seems one option on the table is for QT to put together another alternative history epic that would in fact be the completion of a trilogy that began with 'Inglourious Basterds.' He's calling it 'Killer Crow.' It too takes place in Europe in 1944, and follows a squadron of black soldiers. It sounds a little nascent at the moment, but here's what he said in a recent interview...

"I don't know exactly when I'm going to do it, but there's something about this that would suggest a trilogy. My original idea for Inglourious Basterds way back when was that this [would be] a huge story that included the [smaller] story that you saw in the film, but also followed a bunch of black troops, and they had been f--ked over by the American military and kind of go apes--t. They basically -- the way Lt. Aldo Raines (Brad Pitt) and the Basterds are having an "Apache resistance" -- [the] black troops go on an Apache warpath and kill a bunch of white soldiers and white officers on a military base and are just making a warpath to Switzerland. It would be [connected to] Inglourious Basterds, too, because Inglourious Basterds are in it, but it is about the soldiers. It would be called Killer Crow or something like that."

So we need to look at this from two angles. First, does this project sound like something we would want to see? I'm an avid Tarantino fan so I would watch him direct an 'Annie' remake...which I assume would be uber violent and reference all manner of 70s biker movies. That said, I'm not sure how productive it is for him to try and lock himself into a trilogy. He goes on in the interview to say that only half of 'Killer Crow' is written at the the moment, and that he had originally conceived of it as a miniseries, one that had to be tamed down. So having to retrofit the second half back to his usual style might present the danger of a sloppy narrative. But more than that, one of the biggest and most frequent complaints lobbed against 'Django Unchained' was how it handled racism against African-Americans. Why would Tarantino want to again put himself in a position wherein his movie would be judged by his era-specific uses of racial slurs rather than the plot or stylistic choices? The second angle to consider here is whether this project will ever actually happen. My guess is that it won't. 'Killer Crow' smacks of 'Kill Bill 3' or that discarded Vega Brothers movie; just another fleeting idea in Tarantino's frenzied mind.

What do you guys think? Will 'Killer Crow' ever see the light of day? Would you want to see it?

Wait, did Native Americans use the N-word?

Man, Tarantino sure does have a whole lot of white guilt. Perhaps he should try to make a movie that has some kind of originality, and not just "(insert oppressed minority here) revenge fantasy" before he alienates himself.

Am I the only person that think this guy is a hack? I mean IMO he hasn't made anything good since Jackie Brown, though I do like Kill Bill (but that film is just fun), I mean he is just becoming a rich man's Robert Rodriguez. He is always doing the same thing

Let's certainly hope not. A movie that takes place in an alternate WWII era that has the Inglorious Bastards in almost a cameo appearance? That sounds almost exactly like a movie Quentin Tarantino directed called INGLORIOUS BASTARDS. They barely showed up in their own movie. I'll be honest. I'm not really thrilled at this idea. My vote is for him to direct a movie that puts Sam Jackson and Christophe Waltz as a dynamic duo and have them just fight all manner of baddies. Now THERE's a fun movie.

@ David, An alternate history of the US expansion maybe set around the building of The Union Pacific Railroad where you have multiple ethnic groups in the mix might be nice.  That said, for as much as I enjoyed Basterds none of my critic friends here in Boston have been kind to Django, and we here at Spill already know what the Crew thinks of it.  So I'm a little concerned about him continuing this series of films without help in the writing and editing department.

I am cool with it and not cool with it.Cool with it: I admire him for trying to put some black product on the map(fox tv le 1987-1993) but if spike lee or somebody else did it would it be different? But wait that was mention so what of the country? it still as racist as it will ever be.No matter how you put a product of this calibur out there there will still be hate against blacks, asians and hispanics.

Why not make an asian movie of a mexican fantasy or better yet train some up and coming directors on how a movie should be done.I don't get why these new directors don't get training from the old directors.Get some segway into the industry and what plato said bring some new ideas to the forfront.Because hollywood is on the verge of dying. It is these guys that come from Nollywood(Nigeria),Bollywood(India),Korea,China,Latin America,Spain,Germany,Italy that are bringing the talent with independent films.Train these guys on how it is done Francis coppolla,Martin Scorseccess(sorry if i spelled it wrong),Spike lee because these guys ( up and commers) don't know what to do with a failing hollywood.

@Allan Jensen "I'd like for him to look at the Native Americans or Salem witch trials."

Good idea.

I loved Inglorious Basterds, I really like Django (though I understand why the Spill crew didn't), I love Tarantino, and I like this alternate history trilogy idea, but I feel iffy on this "Killer Crow" idea. I think Tarantino has got to lay off the subject of race for a while unless he's going to offer some real insight instead of just trying to empower black people by having them kill white people. I think it's just getting old and he really pushed it with Django, even if it didn't bother me.

Get him to direct the Assassins Creed movies and give them a fighting chance
