If we learned anything from the 'Taken' movies, it's that the one thing you really don't want to take is a vacation with Liam Neeson. The first film was directed by Pierre Morel, but Oliver Megaton replaced him for 'Taken 2.' Now it looks like Olivier Megaton, who has probably the greatest name this side of Armie Hammer, has landed himself a cool new project. He has been tapped to helm fact-based action thriller 'Taking Gotham.' The film centers on a secret NYPD unit that was established to combat a string of violent robberies in the city. However, when one of their sting operations turns deadly, the unit is disbanded and disavowed; the members going underground and forced to clear their names. Emmett/Furla Films is producing.
Total coin flip for me. On the one hand, I am fascinated by this story, and intend to research the factual components of it. The idea that the NYPD would, in this day and age, commission a secret task force is mind-blowing. Not wholly unbelievable, but captivating nonetheless. It sounds like a contemporary version of 'Gangster Squad.' The whole team-of-guys-out-to-clear-their-names plot conceit came back in fashion in a big way in 2010; 'The A-Team,' 'The Losers,' 'The Expendables,' etc. I'll be interested to see if that resurgence has staying power. All that said, the fact that Megaton is directing drains my enthusiasm to see 'Taking Gotham' almost completely. I loved the first 'Taken,' but Megaton's sequel was a frustrating mess with absolutely no discernible understanding of what made the first one so good. Prior to that he did 'Colombiana' and 'The Transporter 3.' When the best thing on your resume is 'Colombiana'...yeah.
What do you guys think? Are you interested 'Taking Gotham?' Any Megaton fans out there want to defend his talents?

Don't feel too bad, I think when this film is released a lot of fans will be disappointed it's not about the GCPD!
I'm in no hurry to see Taken 2!

Comment by Cyberlink2 on December 17, 2012 at 1:17pm I got excited for a split second when I thought it was a take on the police side of things in the batman story, then I realized I'm an idiot and went back to not caring.
Megaton is terrible director and there are others who could do better.
Comment by Daniel Truong on December 16, 2012 at 10:54am Columbiana and Taken 2 were a mess directorally. I hate Megaton
Comment by Amia on December 16, 2012 at 10:16am Why the fuck would you put Gotham in the damn title, if it has nothing to do with the Batman universe at all?!
