Before you ask, yes I know this movie came out in theaters awhile back. However, after seeing it today and since it just came out on DVD, I wanted to give my thoughts on the film in celebration of this being release on DVD. NowWith that out of the way, enough chit chat, on to the review.

Super review

Superhero movies have always been a popular genre especially in recent years. Many of them are hits such as The Dark Knight, and The Incredibles, quite a few of them are misses such as Wolverine and Daredevil. Now we have Super, while not necessarily being based on a comic book and also being a very indie film, it’s a film that might one of the very best Superhero hero movies out there. Super is one of those films that end up being funny, intelligent, disturbing and entertaining all at once and does a perfect job at mixings those emotions into one film.

Super is a film that is obviously being compared to last year’s Kick-Ass which had an incredibly similar premise. Both films are about what would happen if someone ended up trying to be an actual Superhero and through the course of both films, we get to see if being an actual superhero turns out good or bad for our main characters in the end. However, not only is it an incredibly indie version of Kick-Ass, I would also actually consider it to be a much better film to Kick-Ass, and this is coming from someone who loved Kick-Ass. One thing for certain, it is a much darker movie than Kick-Ass. Super is the perfect definition for an extremely dark comedy, especially compared to Kick-Ass.  At the same time, the darker tone Super has compared to Kick-Ass almost makes it a better movie as well, however that’s probably due to the fact it is a much more realistic than Kick-Ass was. While Super has it over the top moments, it doesn’t become too jokey like Kick-Ass did, since the humor is pretty consistent and never goes ridiculously over the top when it comes to the humor. Super shows how difficult it can be to actually become a real life superhero and does an excellent job portraying this concept than in any other movie with this similar situation.

Another strong point that makes Super excellent is that it is also a character study. Frank the Crimson Bolt is a fascinating character to watch because this film shows why he became a super hero and also shows how tragic his life really is. While we are disturbed by this character because we do realize that he is a psychopath with the actions he ends up doing, we also sympathize with him since he is a character that you really feel sorry for since he never had a good life to begin with. The element also makes him more effective where we see why he is doing the stuff he does later on as screwed up as it is. I shouldn’t also forget to mention Rain Wilson’s performance as this character too; he does an incredible job by being sympathetic and also a bad-ass a few times later on in the film. The rest of the cast also deserve to be mention as one of the strong point of this film too because they all do a great job. Ellen Page is great as the Crimson’s bolt in both being very likable at times and even very disturbing at times too. Not to mention the fact that this is probably the hottest Ellen Page has ever been on film as well. Kevin Bacon, Liv Tyler and Nathan Fillion are also great as some of the minor characters in this film, and while some of them don’t get a whole lot of screen time, their performance alone makes up for it since everyone does a great job in this film.

There are also very little things that make Super so much better than it already. There’s a great animated intro at the very beginning which easy one of the highlights of the film. The action scenes are very fun to watch and especially later on, incredibly violent to watch, which is a plus for those who want their movies to be as violent as possible. Not to the mention that as the dark as comedy is, Super is a very funny movie on its own, while it’s not for everyone, it’s definitely great for those who like incredibly dark comedies such as Super. This does bring me to one of the few downfalls of Super. While, it’s not necessarily a complaint but it is a warning, and that is that this movie is not for the faint of heart at all. The dark comedy gets so extremely dark at points, if you are a casual film watcher or you hate dark movies then this is not the movie for you. With that being said, If you can get pass how dark this movie gets, then it’s definitely worth checking out.

Over-all, Super is easily one of the best films I have seen all year. It’s a shame that it was only limited release because if it got a wider release, it would have been a must see in theaters right away. However, now that it is on DVD and Blu-ray, it is a movie that you have to rent now to see how great this movie really is, especially if you’re into dark comedy and/or if you’re into to superhero movies. Super is a movie that I will be thinking about for a long time and I cannot wait to watch it again.

I hear all of this praise and I just don't see it. I haven't seen a lot of indie films, so I would imagine that this is one of the better ones, which isn't saying much as it seems. It started out strong, had a pretty good soundtrack, fine use of what little budget it had and boasted a surpsingly solid performance by Rainn Wilson. Outside of that, it was just boring and thrown-together, with unlikeable, inconsistent characters and a sense of humor that's also inconsistent. Actually, I take that back, because the humor was consistently fall-flat. I've seen many films get progressively better and better, but this is one of those rare films that got progressively weaker and weaker or at least until the final act, where it did get quite compelling, yet very disturbing in a very bad way. Now, I'll forgive disturbances, but the reason why the final act is so disturbing in a bad way is because it's over-the-top, rather comedic gore in the middle of a very dramatic situation.

I don't know, man, but it just didn't work for me. It's not bad, but not really good. It's a 2/5, Passable. Also, if I could mention something else overrated about this film, how on earth is Ellen Page hot in this? Just because of that forced, unappealing grind dance she did in her ridiculous costume? Really, if anything, I'm much less attracted to her and I wasn't crazy about her to begin with. She's just so disturbing and boyish in the film. Not to mention that we see her in shorts and I'm sorry, but I like legs, not twigs.

Doesn't hold a candle to kick-ass

eh BOY! you only stated how "very disturbing" ellen page's boltie was at times.

she was fucking psychotic, and man oh man was she that damn sexy and hot at the same time.

my only complaint is 100% subjective but i just wish that SUPER was far more graphic in details with not the violence but the sexuality, as i do wish sincerely that despite its sexiness it should have fucked with the MPAA minds in giving it a NC-17 rating, and i am a european prick that loves the B-movies, so it should have gone farther.

Other wise this is a awesome film man!!!

I Really wanted to like this Film, AND I DID. it was fun, dark, touching, gory, and just damn right fun. The start might be a little slow for some, But like all super hero Origin Films it takes a while to fit into place.

This movie is good.

Not great, but good.

I thought the acting was too over the top, but, hell yeah, it's an ok movie to watch.

It's destined to be a major cult classic and I loved every minute of it. I got to meet James Gunn at Comic Con this year and he is definitely one of the coolest people I've ever met, too.

Just watched the film this weekend, and I once again have to bow to James Gunn who is a fucking genius writer/director. This movie had me going from doubled-over in laughter (Boltie's soliloqouy to bystanders following a 'car accident'), to shouting in surprise at some of the action, to just amazed by nearly every performance (I'm looking at you Rainn Wilson, most specifically the last 15 mintues or so).

This movie should come with a disclaimer though...that it is unbelievably dark, emotional and complex and not to be viewed by anyone who isn't willing to give it time to show what it is doing.

Also...to Skelling Jack...tell me English isn't your first language dude. Cuz if it is...damn. Did you type this thing while riding the Cyclone?
