Estimates are in, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen reached astounding heights of box office glory in its opening 5 days, soaring to a level not seen since a certain caped crusader.
The sequel to Michael Bay's Transformers grossed an unbelievable $201.2 million in its first 5 days of release, breaking several records, and coming surprisingly close to others. The Friday-to-Sunday weekend portion of the gross came to an (estimated) $112.0 million, easily the biggest opening weekend gross of 2009 so far and the 7th biggest opening weekend performance of all time. This also ranks as the all-time largest opening ever for the month of June, eclipsing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban's $93.6 million opening in June 2004.
Revenge of the Fallen opened on Wednesday the 24th to the tune of $60.6 million, the second-largest opening day of all time (only behind The Dark Knight's $67.1 million Friday gross). This also ranks as the single largest Opening Wednesday of all time, obliterating the $44.2 million of past record-holder Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Thursday saw a gross of $28.6 million, a sharp decline of 52.8% from its opening day. This initially brought up concerns that intense front loaded demand and negative word-of-mouth would hurt the film's Friday-to-Sunday performance.
Yeah, right.
Friday the 26th saw an (estimated) gross of $36.8 million, or an increase of 28.6% over Thursday, which is good enough evidence that word-of-mouth would wind up meaning jack s*** for this movie. Saturday was even more surprising, seeing an uptick of 10.3% to $40.6 million. Sunday is estimated to see a (smaller-than-you'd-expect) 14.8% decline to $34.6 million. In other words, even though Transformers fell short of The Dark Knight's record of crossing the $100 mark in just two days (this record also applies to Spider-Man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest), it managed to cross the $200 million mark in 5 days, matching The Dark Knight's record there. The five-day total is within inches of The Dark Knight's record five-day total of $203.7 million.
In other words, a third film is imminent, and Michael Bay will likely have total creative control to do whatever he wants... again.
Please Spielberg, start looking for that leash before pre-production starts.
