Strange, Captivating First Trailer For 'Upstream Color'

I hadn't heard of the upcoming film 'Upstream Color,' and I'd hazard many of you hadn't either. However, what instantly had me interested to watch the movie's first trailer was the fact that it is written and directed by Shane Carruth. If that name seems vaguely familiar, it's because Carruth also wrote and directed the fantastic time travel thriller 'Primer.' 'Upstream Color' will mark his first film in nine years, so yeah, I'd say I'm excited. The trailer starts off sort of slow and overly-moody, but once it gets moving it's clear something really intriguing and sinister is lurking beneath the indie rom-drama surface. Carruth also shot, edited, provided the music for, and stars in 'Upstream Color,' which has its premiere at Sundance this coming weekend. Take a look at the trailer below and let us know what you think.

'Upstream Color' is due in theaters April 5th

I love primer, and I'm excited to see Shane Carruth's name attached to another project. 9 years is a long time.

I'm thinking Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind - Primer style.

(I'll still see it. Primer was pretty great.)

Well shit, if I wrote, directed, shot, starred in, edited, and scored a movie it'd probably take me 9 years too.

I actually disliked Primer invariably. I just don't enjoy Carruth's indie (almost documentary-like) style because it's such a mark of overly stylized, boring material. The handheld camera, the shallow depth of field, and most of all... the overuse of light shining into our eyes.

It doesn't feel like a seamless portrayal into a world or story. It feels like some indie director wanted to make every shot look like the most indie shot in the history of indie films. Yes, I have a complex over Carruth, hah. -m

Wow. This looks really well done, he has used his 10 year break wisely.

Loved Primer.  Definitely has my interest.  I really like when a writer/director is so involved in a film.  Hopefully it is truly is creation.

Good job that a two-minute trailer both made me very interested and didn't spoil anything. At the same time, I'm really getting tired of that "duuurrrrrmmmmmm" thing in trailers everyone started doing since Inception.
