Stewart & McKellen Returning For 'X-Men: Days Of Future Past'

Some exciting news today regarding 'X-Men: Days of Future Past.' When that storyline was chosen as the basis for the new X-Men film, centering around alternate futures shaped by the events of the past, the creative chronology afforded the movie some rather interesting opportunities to bridge the continuities between 'X-Men: First Class' and the first three films. The 1960s versions of Magneto and Professor XMichael Fassbender and James McAvoy respectively, could share the screen with their more contemporary selves. Today, not far removed from the news that Bryan Singer was returning to the franchise, we move one step closer to that reality. It was just announced that both Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart will be appearing in 'X-Men: Days of Future Past.' Bryan Singer revealed it via his Twitter account...

"Thrilled to announce & are joining the cast of More to come..."

Singer further announces that Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult would be returning for 'Days of Future Past,' but I'm not sure that was ever in doubt. Honestly, I see this as the best possible scenario. As I mentioned, the chronology of 'Days of Future Past' makes the idea of old and young Magneto and Prof. X overlapping on screen something more legitimate than a mere gimmick. And if that overlap was going to be a part of the script in the first place, why would you want anyone but Stewart and McKellen playing the more temporally advanced versions of those characters? Given Bryan Singer's relationship with these two actors, after directing them in both 'X-Men' and 'X-Men 2,' it was only a matter of time before the original cinematic Magneto and Professor X were attached. Now it'll be interesting to see if Singer can temper his affinity for McKellen and Stewart and balance their narrative impact with that of Fassbender and McAvoy.

What do you guys think? Are you excited to see Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart have come aboard? Care to make a case for why, and which, two other actors should have played older versions of Magneto and Professor X?

@ Matthew X

I feel like continuity errors are moot when time travel is involved.

Like the new star trek movie for example

This is a genius way to officially reboot the series without necessarily calling it a reboot.

This works.....It basically is a reboot and totally erases the last three movies & basically acts as if they never happened except for the fact that the audience knows that McKellen & Stewart were in the originals.

I can not wait to see what Bryan Singer does with these great actors.

I'm glad this isn't a sequel to X-Men III because I'd be hard pressed to figure out who would have the patience to paste Patrick Stewart back together again.

Fassbender and McKellen on screen together is worth the price of admission alone
