Still crippled by that lingering childhood fear of clowns? Well prepared to wet yourselves. Warner Brothers is bringing Stephen King's 'It' to the big screen. The story centers on a group of kids who, even into their adult years, must contend with a shape-shifting monster who appears as a clown called Pennywise and has a penchant for child murder. 'It' was first adapted into a miniseries for ABC starring, among others, John Ritter, Harry Anderson, and Annette O'Toole. WB has decided to revamp the story into two feature films and has just signed Cary Fukunaga ('Jane Eyre') to direct. Fukunaga will also co-write the script with Chase Palmer. No word yet on when production is set to begin.
When I was a kid, I watched a lot of horror movies. Few of them managed to legitimately scare me and, when you're a horror fan of that age, that tends to build an ill-advised bravado in you. Then I watched 'It,' and had to sleep with the lights on for a week. I then made the mistake of reading the book in high school...and had to sleep with the lights on for a month. I really hope that this new cinematic version of the story, or I should say versions, explores some of the dark, twisted territory in the book that network TV would not allow of the 1990 miniseries. I completely understand the choice to split this thing into two movies. Even the miniseries recognized the two massive and distinctive acts of the story; one set when The Losers Club are kids and one taking place in their adulthood. I'm not a huge fan of Fukunaga's 'Jane Eyre,' but I loved 'Sin Nombre' so I have no doubts about his abilities. My big question is who are they going to get to play Pennywise? Tim Curry's portrayal is the stuff of true, lasting nightmares and I can't imagine anyone else in the role.
What do you guys think? Are you excited for another 'It?' Is Fukunaga the right choice to direct? Who should play Pennywise?

Correction; the miniseries starts with the death of a small girl (not in the book) and then goes into a flashback showing Ben's brother Georgie's death at the hands of It.
Jon,
The miniseries did as commendable a job as they could, breaking the story into two sections the way they did. It also did include scenes from the book but rearranged and altered a bit. Like the movie version of Carrie, the book's ending is pared down quite a bit for the movie. Derry is being destroyed at the same time the kids are fighting "It", as it was the town being destroyed (as shown in the TV movie) as Carrie made her way home from the prom. In the end, Stephen King writes books that you can totally get into until you reflect on it afterwards. For example, in It, there is a giant cosmic turtle whose tongue the main character grasps onto as he fights the deadlights (if I remember correctly) and repeats his stutter-prescribed tongue twister. How the heck do you shoot that? What does that mean? It's going to be tough to translate that to the screen. The main thing is, the miniseries was not very frightening (to me, at least) but the novel was -- just as The Shining novel was...and probably for the same reasons. The horrors described within rely heavily on the reader's imagination. King can describe excellently what something feels or smells like (he's great with similes) but the reader's mind has to provide the scary visuals in most cases. You should really treat yourself to the novel, Jon. If you don't have the time, the audiobook is available in most libraries to be rented. It is read by Stephen Weber quite well but don't listen to it at night. Weber is quite expressive and you won't get a wink of sleep if you do. Hope this helps.
PS Just as an example, the movie starts with the death of the main character's brother. In the novel, it starts with a town celebration and the vicious murder of a flamboyant homosexual, witnessed by his lover. The canal plays a big part in the book as it does this scene where the lover spies the clown biting into the still living homosexual's armpit under a bridge after some town toughs throw him into the canal. The book is a big mishmosh, but still a frightening mishmosh all the same.
If it sticks closer to the book than the original tv- mini-series it could be great. The book is filled with highly disturbing imagery/themes that the mini series just couldn't adapt because of the restrictions placed on it.
if it ends with a shitty alien spider being killed with a fucking shovel its going to be shit just like the miniseries. this movie was scary as a kid, until the end when its a spider then i was left more confused than scared, and now looking back at it shits laughable. fucking stephen king...
If it's going to be based off of the book, is it a remake? I can understand calling something a remake if it's based off of the screenplay of the original film, but if it's just another adaptation of the book...
Comment by The Ultimate "Psych" Fan on June 10, 2012 at 7:23pm I'm just praying they don't shove the child gang-bang scene in there. I'm telling you, Kind was coked off his ass when he wrote that part. Tim Curry FTW!
Comment by Kesha Schafer on June 10, 2012 at 3:20pm I don't like the idea of a remake of this movie leave the corny horror movies alone!
Comment by The GodDamn Fatman on June 10, 2012 at 2:43pm The first half of It was genuinely scary but I wonder how they will do the second half to make it as good. There's so much potential here for good scares because It's a shapeshifter. They can literally put in any monster or creature or scary imagery they want.
Comment by Jon Riddle on June 10, 2012 at 2:17pm How closely did the TV version match the book? I haven't read it.
Either way, I agree with Sam Hill and the others who point out the many and blaring flaws of the TV miniseries. The ending was terribly acted, staged, and executed. This could be good, and I hope it is. Cabin in the Woods has really got my horror bug itching for some more movie monsters!
