Star Wars: The Reboot We Need the Most

I know, I know, you fanboys are all probably thinking the same thing, "Blasphemy!! Blasphemy!! How dare you say we need to reboot Star Wars!!! Crucify him!!!!" Hey, I'll be the first to say, I would've had the same reaction. The thing is, I would've had that reaction years ago, before the prequels, before the cartoons, before the marketing, before the universe expanded and essemtially changed Star Wars from what it was. Not only would I have had that reaction because it was Star Wars, but also because it was another reboot. I've never really been a fan of the whole "lets reboot everything!" craze that has been going on. I feel that reboots aren't the only way to fix a dying franchise (Predator reboot= pointless, Alien prequel= now that's a good idea). However, I do feel reboots are necessary to the franchises that really do need it. No matter how much you wanna deny it, whether you like the prequels or not, whether you like all the expanded universe or not....Star Wars needs a reboot.

Recently, I read a great article about the concept of a potential reboot on io9.com which can be read here: http://io9.com/5283368/how-to-reboot-star-wars

This person is saying word-for-word how I think a reboot should and could be done. Before you people start forming a mob and lighting your torches, just take a few minutes to let the idea absorb in your head. Should I bring up the example we've seen this summer of how a space opera can be successfully rebooted?

The Star Trek reboot is arguably (emphasis on the "arguably" trekkies) the best Star Trek movie we've ever seen. Let's analyze why this is. J.J. Abrams went back to tell the story of the characters that we grew to love. Don't expect to see Patrick Stewart popping up in this new series anytime soon. This Star Trek is just good ol' Captain Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the Enterprise crew going on their adventures.

That brings me to my next point, Abrams made Star Trek fun. He managed to bring in a wider audience because he showed just how much fun you can have with the franchise and even made people interested enough to go back and watch the older films in the franchise.

These among the various problems with all of the new age Star Wars films. They're not fun, they're uninteresting stories (republic disputes over trade routes, WTF?!!!), they are at this point WAY to convoluted, and one of the biggest things with me...I FUCKING HATE THESE CHARACTERS!!!!!

Face it people, Star Wars has changed. But things can still turn around. It can be that same fun experience we had when we were kids and remind us all of why we went to the movies. Even though you wanna make it fun, it can still be a well-written, well-concieved story that's focused about telling a good story, and not about oversaturating it with special effects, unnecessary characters, and inconsistent plot elements. This is the prime oppotunity to revisit the journey of Luke Skywalker and friends, and all the adventures they went on.

The most important point I wanna stress that'll freak out fans the most is that you can't do the exact same thing as the originals. I know it sounds scary, but when you do a shot-by-shot remake, it just makes the film pointless (Psycho remake anyone?). As a filmmaker, you have to have a pair of balls and be willing to take a few liberties with the story while still managing to capture the essence of that mythology.

For example, I don't wanna see anymore of this Episode # shit! You don't have to set it up to the audience that you're going to make a trilogy of prequels. Focus on making your one film and call it "Star Wars", thats it!!!

Now...theres that Berlin Wall that has to be taken down:

Lets face it. George Lucas would never allow a reboot to happen unless it'll make him more money. The thing is, since the popularity of Star Wars has been decreasing, that may be his only option to sell more toys. I JUST DON'T WANT HIM TO DO IT! He's just gonna be typical "Hrm, I'm-George-Lucas-I'm-Awesome!" and make more bullshit like he did with the prequels. All we could really do at this point is pray. Pray that he'll wise up and let someone else step up to the plate or pray that he'll die (I know, I'm kind of evil).

Let's all just hope. Hope that one day, we can fly with Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia in the Millenium Falcon against the tyranny of Darth Vader, and Star Wars can go back to the way it was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

Also the Predator reboot turned into a sequel to the first movie.

The reason the Star Trek reboot worked so well was because the Star Trek universe had time travel, alternate realities, and parallel universe's so it was the perfect franchise to do a reboot with. The movie also acts as not only a reboot, but a prequel/sequel/reboot hybrid.

Star Wars doesn't have all of the things that made the Star Trek reboot so successful and unlike Star Trek, Star Wars was a landmark in cinema history while Star Trek started out as a TV show and the movies, up until the recent one, didn't do anything cool or groundbreaking that Star Wars did.

So that's why Star Wars can never be rebooted, even when Lucas dies, filmmakers will have to much respect for this franchise as a whole to make a reboot. What would be better though, and would work better for the fanboys, is if another director was allowed work on films from the expanded universe after Return of the Jedi, that would be better then a reboot.

I would love to see a good Star Wars reboot. George Lucas no longer understands his own creation. I nominate Peter Jackson.

I'd rather they didn't. The original trilogy are classics. Just do what I do, pretend the new trilogy never happened.

I hope a re-boot happens after George Lucas is DEAD because if George Lucas made a re-boot it would be a cartoon, clone wars like, racial stereoyping, look-at-the-pretty-colours special effects bullshit. Also I am all for a re-boot of the prequels but that goes without saying.

To those talking about the book storylines he "ruined", keep this in mind: Lucasarts and Goerge Lucas himself has to approve of ALL material created or written for Star Wars before release. He ok'ed stories like The New Republic series and Shadows Of The Empire, not to mention all games as well.

And in the Lucas-verse (I can't believe I typed that. Fuck you, Josh Weadon), if he approved then he can re-write it. He has absolute control over everything labelled Star Wars, therefore he can do as he pleases with it....including re-writting other people's work based on his stories.

Andres, the reason there will be and should not be a reboot of Star Wars...is that not only will you upset fanboys, not only could you never meet the expectation of the audience, that no matter how good it is it will always be compared to the original....is that it's already been done. Three times.

Lucas redid all the originals and added new scenes with his 'Special Edition', and THEN he made the prequels to further re-write his own history.....and make more money. He even "rebooted' the prequels with that awful cartoon 'Clone Wars' to make Anakin less whiney and more heroic.

So you want a fourth attempt at this? Sorry but I must say no. I understand the need, the desire to see my favorite charactersd again, see them battle Darth Vader, fly against the Death Star, trade smart-assed comments and save the universe. But I have that...on DVD.

Until Lucas dies, there is no chance of this...and it is possible that chance would still be far away. Oh, someday it will be done, but instead of hoping and praying for movies that pissed you off to be redone just so you can get that taste of defeat out of your mouth, hope for new and original stories that lift our spirits and imaginations again.

Gift of the Magi - I agree with your points. Especially with making a film that takes place after the original trilogy. That would be pretty cool! But I'm also fond of the idea of another prequel (not anything like the prequel trilogy). I've never played these games, but a lot of people say 'The Old Republic' video games have amazing stories and some of the cinematic battles in the games look more badass than anything in the prequel trilogy. I just saw a trailer of the new 'Old Republic' game and it looked badass. You can either go and tell a story of what happened in the original trilogy, or you can make a prequel, that takes place thousands of years before Episode I - The Phantom Menace!

A reboot just isn't going to happen for two main reasons IMO.

(1) George Lucas has made his two trilogies his "bible" of the Star Wars universe. He's revised the original trilogy so deliberately that it's very unlikely he'll up and say, "well, that didn't happen." With his insertion of Hayden Annie into the ending of ROTJ, it's almost as unlikely for him to undermine the second trilogy either. He might tweak or add material as he did with the first but he's not going to start over from scratch. He'd want his hands in that pie, and that requires a lot more creative (read: taxing) effort from him than marketing.

(2) I think Lucas puts his trilogies first and anything in the Expanded Universe a distant second, which is his loss because the Star Wars universe has matured significantly past suckling from his films. Revitalizing the franchise doesn't require going back to Episode IV or Episode I when a creative team can stake their claim most any other time and place. It's how the fans thrived via literature, audio, and games. I'd much rather see the cinematic translation of the saga of Kyle Katarn - someone the general public knows **** about - than see them revisit Darth Vader or Obi-Wan. Kir Kanos, Mara Jade, Nomi Sunrider, Exar Kun... the SW universe is ripe with rich characters both the fans and the movie-going public could get a real kick out of seeing. But, like I said, they aren't exactly Lucas's direct progeny...

LoL, the devil went soft there for a moment...

Seriously though, when a man for whatever reason takes the greatest thing he's ever made and fucks it up completely, then he's either a sell-out or senile. I don't know if Lucas made the three pequels to make new toys or new video games, since he has been doing a pretty good job exploiting the first trilogy and the extended universe for a loooong time; so maybe he's just losing it... or maybe he lost it long ago (Christmas Special anyone?).

I seriously doubt that a new shot on a Star Wars movie could produce something good.. Lucas made the prequels thinking "we made three of the greatest sci fi movies ever by using primitive technology, think of what we'll be able to do now!" and we all saw how that turned out... I think it's very difficult that someone could achieve the right Star Wars feeling in a new film and I'm personally pretty happy with how the video games have taken the franchise a few steps ahead story-wise.

There's the interesting story of Kyle Katarn or even Starkilller that someone could make a film about, but the quest of making films out of videogames has always concluded in epic fails.
