About a month ago, it was reported that Universal was planning to revamp 'The Mummy,' returning the creature to his horror roots. The new Mummy is set to be penned by Jon Spaihts ('The Darkest Hour'), and now the project has added a pair of high-profile producers. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman's company K/O Paper Products has just signed a 2-year production deal with the studio which will not only see them reimagining 'The Mummy,' but also 'Van Helsing' as well. Reportedly, Universal's next crack at the monster-hunting character will star Tom Cruise. No word yet on the precise schedule of these productions, nor if Orci and Kurtzman will be lending their talents to the screenwriting in addition to producing.
Ok, so a few things to take away from this story. First, 'The Mummy' reboot now has more muscle behind it than just 'The Darkest Hour' scribe. Orci and Kurtzman's 2009 'Star Trek' script was phenomenal and their work on 'Fringe' has been outstanding. I'm not saying they're without flaw, I mean they did inexplicably cull 'Transformers 2' from their collective brain, but I strongly feel these are two of the best screenwriters working in Hollywood right now. They've also done quite a bit of producing in the past, so this is not a new move for them. The other thing to take away here is that Universal is indeed planning to reboot 'Van Helsing,' which is sorely needed as their first attempt was abysmal. I'm not sure how I feel about Tom Cruise in the lead, but I am interested in competent artists taking a serious approach to the character. My only concern is that I hope Orci and Kutzman are involved in the script and not just producing. I can see them doing great things with both 'Van Helsing' and 'The Mummy' and I can't see why they would only be brought on to produce, seems like a waste of talent. But that's just me, what do you guys think?
Do you think this is a good move for Orci & Kurtzman? Would you be interested in a 'Van Helsing' reboot they wrote?

Comment by Arsène Lupin the Third on May 2, 2012 at 12:24am Brewskifi hollywood has rebooted thing since the beginning (there was a movie originally made in 1914 REMADE TWICE by the same director over 10 years of the orignal's relase)
Comment by Brewskifi on May 2, 2012 at 12:20am How about STOP REBOOTING THINGS.
Comment by Arsène Lupin the Third on May 1, 2012 at 10:41pm Van Helsing as a general supernatural adventure just make sure it doesn't go off the f***ing rails like Jackmans where you find out some weird crazy s***. Mummy reboot would be good with me as Imhotep is a great character and the jumps in CG animation will help out stuff alot.
Comment by Trebor on May 1, 2012 at 10:20pm The Star Trek script was in no way phenomenal
Comment by AndrewWILLSONThe ShogunOfAustin on May 1, 2012 at 8:59pm hmmmm could work
I'll be interested in Van Helsing if it ties better to Dracula but another whack at a swashbuckling Van Helsing doesn't do much for me. The Mummy has just gotten ridiculous so a more serious and frightening turn would be welcome. Having written that, I'm surprised either properties are getting the reboot treatment because I don't see anyone really calling for more of either film.
Comment by KP Spark on May 1, 2012 at 4:33pm Van Helsing was a poorly executed awesome idea. Hopefully they can get it to meet its potential.
Comment by Luke Hero on May 1, 2012 at 3:11pm Van Helsling Sure, it needs a reboot..the first one was mediocre even though I really liked it....but Leave Mummy The Freak Alone
