'Star Trek Into Darkness' Plot Synopsis Revealed

With a film as high profile as the sequel to J.J. Abrams' 'Star Trek' sequel, certain news bits are almost as eagerly awaited as the film itself. We've been hearing whispers and unconfirmed reports that did little to instill in us a sense of what this movie would really be. Sure, we knew that central cast members like Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, and Simon Pegg were returning, but the rest of the early marketing had been absurdly coy. I mean, a half-second clip on a talk show? Come on.  Today, we finally have something solid to work with. Paramount has released the official plot synopsis for 'Star Trek Into Darkness.' So without further adieu, here it is...

"When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew."

So yeah, still as vague as the back of the video box, but much more than anything we've had to go on up to this point. A traitor in the Federation? A personal score to settle? Suddenly Karl Urban's comments back in July don't seem so outlandish. He had mentioned during an interview that he thought Gary Mitchell was going to be exemplary in the sequel. Mitchell was a character who appeared in one episode of 'Star Trek: TOS.' He was formerly a comrade of Kirk's, but he then obtained telekinetic powers and turned on the crew of the Enterprise. It seemed a stretch that this one-off villain would be the principle baddie for the next blockbuster movie, and perhaps Urban was merely joking or deflecting. But then again, Khan was a one-off villain and 'Star Trek II' is undeniably one of the best movies in the franchise.

What do you guys think? Does this plot lend some credibility to the idea of Gary Mitchell being the villain? If not, where do you think they might go with the plot given this skeletal outline?

@usesoap: I see what you're saying but I think that this is only coincidence and not metaphor. As in, the story may have just been sub concious or fully aware inspiration for the writers during their work, and not a comparison, analogy, or metaphor...just my opinion.

Erm is anybody else seeing the 9/11 slash osama bin laden metaphor here? It's like once you see it...you can't not see it.

@ C
I think you missed the Troll Face at the end of my post. I personally don't care for many of the Star Trek movies except for the last one and WoK.

Actually that would make a lot of sense...a villain who is a former friend with major super powers...would be a very personal score to settle

The Klingons have to be involved in terms of the aftermath of the first film. A Romulan ship from the future destroyed a ridiculous number of Klingon ships...the vacuum of the Vulcan home world left behind.

@Stephan

Ignore Gift of the Magi. He's prone to these little outbursts.

I don't about you. But with Karl Urban's Dredd being such a badass flick. I don't think the crew of the enterprise have anything to worry about. Just send Dredd-I'm mean Bones down and let the Law do his work.

it would make sense that cumberbatch is mitchell, seeing that in the screenshot he's fighting spock in a starfleet uniform
