(500) Days of Summer is the story of Tom Hansen, a hopeless romantic who falls in love with his bosses secretary Summer Finn. Tom works for Hallmark card like company making cheap love cards, he wants to fall in love ever since he saw The Graduate. Summer doesn't believe true love really exists. When we enter the film, we see that Summer seems that she has left Tom's life for good this time, he reflects back on the just the good times over the year that he dated Summer Finn. Summer had always attracted the attention of men, Tom included. For Tom, it was love at first sight when she walked into the greeting card company where Tom worked, and Summer was the new assistant. Soon, Tom knew that Summer was the woman with whom he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Although Summer did not believe in relationships or boyfriends in her assertion, real life will always ultimately get in the way. Tom and Summer became more than just friends. Through the trials and tribulations of Tom and Summer's so called relationship, Tom could always count on the advice of his two best friends, McKenzie and Paul. However, it is Tom's adolescent sister, Rachel, who is his voice of reason. After all is said, Tom is the one who ultimately has to make the choice to listen or not.
Marc Webb despite being a music video director, has brought use an original and realistic love story, that we know from the beginning that it will never end well. We start feel sorry for Tom as he starts to believe love doesn't exist, but it does as Summer explains it's just that she never loved him. And that is when start see that Marc is not only a great music director, but is also I wonderful film director as well, he proves with the characters emotion and development. Also lets not forget, the main actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt who is not only funny, but is delightful to see on screen. We (the audience) want to see Tom win Summer, we want him to fall in love, and to ask Summer out, and we want him to get better after the break-up. That's how brilliant Levitt is, he's just so damn charming, that just love him for who he is.
Out of all the characters Summer's Zooey Deschanel is the weakest of them all, she is just playing the same way she has played in every film, she has no sense of humor, or even no charm on screen. She at times does try, I will admit, but it just seems go worse and worse when she does. No doubt she is has a great jazz voice, but that doesn't save her performance. I don't know if it was intentional, but at times I was like why is he with her? He can do so much better!
Never the less, it was a great ride from start to finish, and I give this film...

It was almost Better than sex movie for me, because it was perfect but Zooey Deschanel just brought the grade down for me.
So please check it out support films like this to be made! Hopefully more romantic comedies will be like this one.
