In March 2010, a visionary named Ewok Princess had an idea: gather as many Spill members in the DC, MD and VA area for a get together. Then, once again in December 2010, she had a new vision: redo a similar get together with the same premise as the original, but throw in new ideas and concepts for members who did not have the chance to come to the first get together. It proved successful, yet it lacked the charm and originality that the first get together had. A good time, but not great and if one could go back to experience the first DMV Spill gathering, you would have had a more worthwhile time.

Or was that Tron: Legacy?

Hello and welcome to DMV Spill, where Ewok Princess rules all and my job is just to take notes and nod. Well, people, it’s December. Finals are ending, snow is falling [sometimes] and there are plenty of movies to see. So why not have another of these

As such, this past Saturday, December 18th, 2010, Ewok Princess, Ken-K, stevoarome and myself, gathered together from the cosmic reaches of the universe, here in this great Regal Gallery Place to see the most underwhelming sequel of 2010 ever assembled.

All right, so more did happened before that. Before seeing the movie, Ken-K, Ewok and I discussed recent Spill news, more specifically the most recent LEOG, the December 17th issue. By the way, if it seems like I’m mentioning Ewok a lot, for those catching on, I do apologize. I realize that Ewok bought me pancakes at the first of these and she has a lot of interesting things to say, but it’s not about playing favorites or being preferential to those who bought me something. No. Nothing could be further from the truth.

You hear me?

Following this, we headed to the main event of the day- Tron: Legacy. Before that, we saw some pretty good movie trailers, among them Cowboys & Aliens. Following that, we viewed trailers for Not Cars, Not Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Not Iron Man and Not Jimmy Neutron.

Oh, all right, for Cars 2, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Green Lantern and Mars Needs Moms.

As for Tron: Legacy. Well, reviews galore are up and over the internet and if you’re on this site, chances are you’ve watched the audio review or seen the video. The movie itself is pretty to look at. The updated light cycle battles look great, yet didn’t take advantage of the 3D. You’d barely notice what scenes are and are not in 3D. 3D light cycle battles? Come on, that would’ve been incredible. But back to the movie- the story of Flynn’s son entering the Grid is passable. Sam [Garrett Hedlund] gives a lot of determination to his character, but he lacks the charm and level of interest that Kevin Flynn had in the 1982 film.

The original Tron had a simple premise: Jeff Bridges’ character Flynn created video games. Ed Dillinger [David Warner] took credit for his work and received promotion after promotion. Flynn enters grid and teams up with Tron to find the evidence of wrongdoing and defeat the Master Control of Program that controls the ENCOM interface. Simple good guys’ versus bad guys’ story. Flynn is a more interesting character: he refuses to kill his first opponent in the disc battle, he tries to get credit for his hard earned work. Here, however, Clu, Flynn’s avatar, has taken over the grid, committed genocide on the ISOs, Flynn lives in the cleanest home in the world with a woman who has a strange fascination with Jules Verne, Michael Sheen apparently had a soundtrack playing throughout his entire screen time to compensate for his constant dancing, and Jeff Bridges must have watched Matrix Revolutions because he takes a page from Neo’s move to wipe out all of the agents at the end of that movie. Oh, and the Scarecrow makes a quick cameo, too. Huzzah.

Following this was a return to Lucky Strikes. Not for bowling or pool this time, but to talk indecency, the economic downturn, politics…and gender roles.

Allow me to pose a question to you all: in light of the first season of The Walking Dead, we arrived on this topic: in what show or movie with an ensemble cast does the wife of her husband not turn her back on him when he dies, is written off and so on, in favor of laying spread eagle and submitting to the husband’s best friend? Life apparently doesn’t work like that and even the waiter herself didn’t have many answers.

My answer to that: District 9, which isn’t really an ensemble movie with a large cast of known actors, but Sharlto Copley’s wife didn’t immediately turn her back on him and based on the ending, there is still a chance that she thinks he’s alive and out there, albeit transformed. What do you all say? Are women still misrepresented in television and movies as wanting to go for the quickest knock up when their husband dies? Sarah didn’t turn to Casey when Chuck was kidnapped, but then again, who among them really thought Chuck would die?

This segued into talking about Spill.con and the demographics.

Then the conversations took a more serious turn to talks of women with perfect asses coupled with mushroom shaped haircuts, do-dirt Jamaicans, upcoming adventures of a Sweden sex show, the creation of the word “fuckery,” why folks need to stay off of the Metro here in the District because of those damn kids [says the guy whose only 20] and their out of control behavior, the probability of who would go to jail [and subsequent anal rape] first between a mixed group of kids and more crazy stories of this year’s Spill.con, among them hook-ups, strippers, gyrating and Spill related events, too.

So when’s the next one of these going to be? March looks like the next time. We’re still on the lookout for all of you Spill members out there in the District, Maryland and Virginia who are interested in small get togethers. We’d like to meet you and it would help us make better connections and forge bonds that you can’t get from just talking on the internet. So if you’re out there, drop by, join Ewok’s MD DC & VA group Right here and we'll see you all soon.

Until then, later days.
