Held here in Austin, TX, the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival is a hodgepodge of media conferences and festivals that focus on the convergence of film, music and interactive independent media. Each year Spill Crew attends the prestigious film festival and attempts to cram in as many film screenings as they can before they exceed maximum capacity and implode (seriously we've had to call tech support for Co-Host four years in a row). The schedule for the event (March 11th-20th) has been released on the official website and here are a few highlights you might want to keep your eyes and ears open for:
'Source Code' - When Capt. Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the body of an unknown man, he discovers he’s part of a sci-fi mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. In an assignment unlike any he’s ever known, he learns he’s part of a government experiment called the “Source Code,” a computer program that enables him to cross over into another man's identity in the last 8 minutes of his life.
Saturday, March 12
'Being Elmo: A Puppeteers Journey' - Beloved by children of all ages around the world, Elmo is an international icon. Few people know his creator, Kevin Clash, who dreamed of working with his idol, master puppeteer Jim Henson. Displaying his creativity and talent at a young age, Kevin ultimately found a home on Sesame Street. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, this documentary includes rare archival footage, interviews with Frank Oz, Rosie O’Donnell, Cheryl Henson, Joan Ganz Cooney and others and offers a behind-the-scenes look at Sesame Street and the Jim Henson Workshop.
Spill Event - Live Let's Do This!!!
Held at Momo's, March 12th from 6-9 pm. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates coming soon.
'Paul' - Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) reunite for Universal Pictures' comedy-adventure Paul as two sci-fi geeks whose pilgrimage takes them to America’s UFO heartland. While there, they accidentally meet an alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) who brings them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever.
'WIN WIN' - Disheartened attorney Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti) volunteers as a high school wrestling coach and stumbles across a star athlete through some questionable business dealings while trying to support his family. Just when it looks like he will get a double pay-day, the boy's mother shows up fresh from rehab and flat broke, threatening to derail everything.
'Hobo With a Shotgun' - Based on the fake-trailer accompanying "Grindhouse", a homeless vigilante (Rutger Hauer) blows away crooked cops, pedophile Santas, and other scumbags with his trusty pump-action shotgun in this retro-style film from director Jason Eisner. The film previously premiered at Sundance to mixed reviews, and is the second fake trailer to be made into a feature-length film.
'The Beaver' - Yeah, yeah, we know... billed as "an emotional story about a man on a journey to re-discover his family and re-start his life", Mel Gibson stars as Walter Black - a once successful toy executive and family man who now suffers from severe and debilitating depression. No matter what he tries, Walter can’t seem to get himself back on track…until a brash and confident beaver hand puppet enters his life.
'The Other F Word' - What happens when a generation's ultimate anti-authoritarians -- punk rockers -- become society's ultimate authorities -- dads? With a large chorus of Punk Rock's leading men -- Blink 182's Mark Hoppus, Red Hot Chili Pepper's Flea, Rise Against's Tim McIlrath --The Other F Word follows Jim Lindberg, 20 year veteran of skate punk band, Pennywise, on his hysterical and moving journey from belting out his band's anthem, "Fuck Authority", to embracing his ultimately pivotal authoritarian role in mid-life, fatherhood.
Friday, March 18
'Bob and The Monster' - Six years in the making, this documentary film follows outspoken indie-rock hero Bob Forrest, through his life-threatening struggle with addiction, to his transformation into one of the most influential and controversial drug counselors in the US today.
'My Sucky Teen Romance' - On 17-year-old Kate's last weekend in town, she and her friends plan to spend it together at SpaceCON– the local sci-fi convention they attend every year. There, Kate meets Paul: a recently turned teen-vampire. But when their awkward teen romance goes wrong, Kate is bitten and turned into a vampire herself. Kate and her friends discover that Paul is not the only other vampire at the convention, and it is up to them to stop the bad guys and find a way to turn Kate back before it is too late.

They only showed the Hobo With A Shotgun trailer in some parts of Canada after it won their contest to help promote the film.
Comment by The Chaz on February 18, 2011 at 12:37am I'm pretty sure Hobo With A Shotgun was not one of the fake trailers featured in Grindhouse, only a fan product inspired by the film. I only recall Machete, Don't, Thanksgiving, and Werewolf Women of the S.S.
Otherwise, I am very excited for Source Code and Paul!
