Sommers Returning For 'G.I. Joe' Sequel?

Source: The Wrap

Though Paramount Pictures hasn't officially confirmed this report, The Wrap is claiming that Stephen Sommers will in fact return to helm the studio's sequel to his mediocre 2009 hit G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Despite reports last year that there was tension between the filmmaker and the studio over the final cut of the film - and it's less than stellar box office returns - the dilemma appears to be resolved. If he does sign on, he'll be working with a more streamlined script from Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (the source claims that Paramount is very pleased with the draft they turned in recently).

Channing Tatum is expected to reprise his role as Duke in the sequel, but there are no plot details currently available. Sommers will produce with Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

Shot on a $170 production budget, G.I. Joe grossed just over $300 million worldwide last year.

Honestly I have to say that I enjoyed the first film for one reason:

It really felt like something you would have woken up and watched saturday morning as a kid. Action and cheezyness but a lot of fun.

That being said, I'm on board for this.

I know that this isn't popular opinion in here but i actually liked the movie.
Its a joyfully stupid action movie the likes of which Michael Bay pretends he's not making.
I loved how amazingly stupid the action scenes in Paris and Antarctica is.
Plus the ending was actually kind of cool.
Cobra's plot to organize the world's nations into joining the Cobra controlled US because of fear of terrorism was really kind of cool.
I really wish that Michael Bay was this self aware that the movies he is making are idiotic.
That way we can all just have fun with the silliness.

I don't know if he signed a contract to be in the sequel but if I was Joseph Gordon-Levitt, I would be calling my agent begging him to get me the hell out of this. After Inception, he really doesn't need to be in something like this. I still don't know why they just didn't go with Resolute's feel and plot for the first movie. It would have been so much better.

Snake-Eyes was good, everything else was... ok. I hope they add Sgt. Slaughter to the mix and get either Hulk Hogan (unless he's too old) or Steve Austin to play him.

LOOK,AS A FAN OF G.I. JOE, THE CARTOON,TOYS,ETC. FROM THE 80's, I THOUGHT THE MOVIE WASN'T THAT BAD ! IT WAS ACTUALLY BETTER THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WAS GONNA BE A TOTAL PIECE OF SHIT, BUT THE PLOT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER ! ALSO THE CASTING FOR THE MOVIE SUCKED, LIKE FOR INSTANCE MARLON WAYNES AS RIPCORD, COME ON THEY COULD HAVE GOT SOMEBODY BETTER THAN A FUCKING WAYNES BRO. SO I HOPE PART 2 WILL HAVE BETTER ACTORS AND A BETTER STORY ! THERES ALOT OF COOL CHARACTERS IN G.I. JOE FOR THEM TO CHOOSE FROM, SO IF THEY(the producers) DO IT RIGHT, THEY CAN MAKE A GOOD SEQUEL THAT FANS WOULD REALLY ENJOY ! $170 MIL. ON THAT MOVIE, HA HA THATS SOME OL BULLSHIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL.

The first GI Joe wasn't that bad. It wasn't a Citizen Kane, but it wasn't horrible, considering it was GI Joe. I'd watch a sequel. Over the top characters, cheesy dialogue. That's what GI Joe is. If you don't know that, you never watched the cartoon. And more Rachel Nichols please.
