Some VGA News: Mass Effect 3 has a date, Kratos in MK, Batman outed? Uncharted 3, Elder Scrolls 5!!!

Now once again, I will discuss all of this in my podcast and I love the fact that all this news is out considering that I wouldn't have much to talk about gaming wise without this. However, since my podcast is not coming for a week I wanted to stay fresh and professional and be one of the first people to bring you these news (at least in my mind). As for my opinion on the winners, wait until you hear it from me, not read on the page, I'm bound to bitch about one of them.

Now.. TO THE GOODIES!!!! As much as I told myself not to get excited by trailers, especially CGI trailers that show no gameplay, my crotch felt uncomfortably tight...

So Mass Effect 3 is coming the very next holiday season. First of all, that news alone got me up and listening carefully. The chance to finally end the saga of Cpt. Shepard is too much to resist and this game is automatically on my radar ever since one.The one thing I really dug from the trailer is that they took it away from Shepard. What that does is it builds anticipation and makes people think, what if they had killed Shepard? Is this what happens? Eventually they bring him into the spotlight but the idea lingers since it's possible for Shepard to meet an unfortunate end at the end of 2. In any case, I love that they brought the Reapers out en-mass, and for the first it really showed what they're capable off. While the first two game did an amazing job building this suspense about the invisible threat, the build up would all be for nothing if they didn't bring all the guns out at the end of the trilogy.

The only thing I am not sure about is that it's a straight attack to earth. The Reapers were meant to be these machine hiding far in the universe, and Shepard the only one to defeat them, why would they go after Earth first and get his attention. I'd love to see them emerge from a far and start eliminating the opposition, making it a race against time for everyone to unite rather than attacking Earth and letting Shepard gather the resistance. In any case, I am incredibly excited for the game and here is to marking up my calendar.

Everyone's favorite Greek homicidal maniac is back, but this time, it is in Mortal Kombat, the reboot of everyone's favorite fighter franchise (unless you just love Street Fighter that much). I was hesitant to let MK slide on any guest characters after the MKvsDC game, and after I've seen Yoda and Darth Vader in Soul Calibur. When a character doesn't fit, it barely make sense, and given Midway's track record with afore mentioned vs. DC crossover I thought they should just stick to basics. Kratos however I did not consider. He is violent, brutal, and definitely not rated Teen, it's the perfect character for MK given the level of violence and really adds to the claim they made that they are going back to the "HOLY SHIT!" type of violence for the reboot.

Arkham City trailer made me very excited for this sequel. The first teaser they released with the Joker kind of had me slapping my forehead... Been here done that. It seems that they may be taking the route that Chris Nolan foreshadowed at the end of Dark Knight, except that this time Wayne does not sacrifice himself, but rather becomes a target of someone in control. I loved seeing Hugo Strange, as he is one of my favorite villains in Batman for certain arcs and I would love to see with the character. Also, having the city as your playground, it has the potential to be just epic. What I hope doesn't happen to this game is that most encounters with major character are not as anti climactic. The best moments in Asylum were the ones dealing with Scarecrow while everything was kind of deflated and too cookie cutter fight, especially the very last boss fight.

Also, it has always been interesting to see the unraveling of Batman when his identity is under threat. The fact that Hugo Strange knows his identity is an interesting twist to the story. I do not expect us running around in a tux as Bruce Wayne, however it could also paint you in the corner where you lose all your support because you can't even go back to the mansion. Finally, I think that if they used Joker for this bit it would be too dragged out, where you kind of see the Joker fucking with Batman just to fuck with him, while as I see Strange being more creative with what might happen.

Now, Uncharted 3, had me somewhat unexcited. Don't get me wrong, I loved the first two games, but it's kind of going the Lara Croft direction in there "what's next route" where it's just the same game. The trailer where he is caught in a tough situation is very similar to the second trailer. Also, who are you going to shoot in the desert?!!! In any case, this was one of the few trailers that didn't establish a strong story element, and as a writer/director I appreciate that stuff in games even more (which is why I love Mass Effect so damn much). However, it just kind of see that we'll end up getting more of the simple rail drive for the story in another exotic locale with not much after thought, which is good, not great.

ELDER SCROLLS is back, but the trailer left much to be desired. In a true way of Bethesda they revealed very little in terms of visuals, however they pained a pretty damn good picture for the story. Once again they've built up an epic catastrophe that is imminent and yes once again the player character will be the only one that can save everyone, however, it worked fine before. With them holding back the visuals I can only hope they fixed some of the visuals, drag them up some more, and even fix that bit where everyone tries to hypnotize you every time you speak by not blinking. We'll see more when they reveal more (and I'll talk more on Elder Scrolls).

Finally, to cap of, a trailer for inSANE (which is how I will spell it until told otherwise), a what I can only assume is a Horror/Psychological Thriller game from Guillermo Del Toro. Now, I've been starved for a great horror game ever since I finished Dead Space, and even that relied on one cheap jump scare too many towards the end. From the mood the trailer sets I am expecting some fucked up shit, especially knowing Del Toro's visual style in the movies. I can't wait to see some more for this, but since it is 2013 it means its barely in progress... Let me know what you think, also, I would very much urge you to PM me your opinions and stuff and I will bring them on my next podcast ;).

@Steve, I mean no harm (haha), I'm actually planning to discuss a lot about these VGAs on my podcast this week, and I do give Uncharted its credit, what I'm saying personally, is that it's just not one of my top games since I'm more into stuff like Mass Effect...

@QbanKnight One of the main reasons I don't rate Uncharted as highly on my list is Drake. I don't connect with him as a character and its harder for me to be invested in the game story because of that despite the gameplay being spot on.

Oh and btw Donut, don't worry about people's hostility to whatever you write, I get that shit all the time in my blogs :D

The Elder Scrolls are kinda like time sinks or World of Warcraft without other players. I'm still interested in seeing what they go since it's been a while since I've played a good medievil-fantasy RPG

Never cared too much for the Uncharted series. I think the second's title of "Game of the Year" is stretching it since I played a few games last year that I enjoyed much more than Uncharted. Don't get me wrong, they're great fun. A great marriage of Gears of War and Classic Tomb Raider. But I FUCKING hate Nathan Drake. I know he's supposed to be smug but he's such a douche that I really can't like him. He's not even a great archaelogist, he just breaks things. Shit, look at the original Indiana Jones movies and see how HE reacts, that's a GREAT treasure hunter

As for Prototype, I enjoyed it in a sick and twisted sort of way. The game was a great big murder simulator in giving you a variety of ways to brutally and viciously maim your fellow human beings: run up a sky scraper and elbow drop onto an old lady, eat a soldier and take his identity to accuse his friend of being you, KICK AN ATTACK HELICOPTER. Yes the plot was shit and batshit-crazy that only a Hideo Kojima fan could enjoy, but the game never stopped being fun so I can appreciate the sequel.

Oh by the way, inSANE is now being touted by del Toro as the first in a horror-game TRILOGY. So far only ONE game in history that was announced as such and is making good on that promise: Mass Effect (which you already showered with deserved praise). Too Human and a couple others have all fucked up because of a developer's hubris so we'll see. That and this is del Toro who's jumping like crazy between projects makes me a little skeptical. I'm happy to see a Hollywood director trying to elevate video games to popular tastes, but so far the record has been pretty sub-par even with great directors like Steven Spieldberg not really contributing to the development of the game (see Boom Blox)

And of course Arkham City looks badass...

Stop making me feel like an ass-hole, man!

>_> I'll reply later on, I have something else to write up. But damnit, I'm felling like a total jerk right now... ._.

Okay, I sense the hostility, but just like any other person's blog, this is my opinion. I never said that the game was going to be shit, and as I said, this is just my initial reaction to the trailer. You clearly love the Uncharted series, and yes, they are great games, definitely the staples of the PS3 line up. Me discussing how I feel about the trailer however does not really equal to me discussing on many of the games. First two had good stories even though I wasn't a big fan of the third act for the 1st game, gameplay that was refined, especially in the second one, that they got down to a T, and were well paced, and from the last bit of the trailer where they showed the gameplay, it wont changed. What I meant by what I said, is that I'm not impressed, and its cautions that they have to be cautious to not fall into the Lara Croft trap and simply throw Drake from one exotic locale and simply go through the motions. In any case, I'll touch upon this at a later date as I have a final paper to write and no time to get into an argument with someone who is obviously a very strong fan. I respect your opinion, and I agree that both games were great, but to reiterate what I said earlier, this was merely my impression from the trailer, not a defining statement on what the game is going to be like in my mind...

The hell are you talking about? Uncharted 3 being similar to Uncharted 2 will by no means make it the same damn game. That's like saying Mass Effect 2 is like 1, and 3 is exactly like 2. Every sequel will keep elements from it's predecessors and expand upon its gameplay and story-telling methods. Just because this trailer, which is more a teaser than anything, didn't reveal much doesn't mean you have the right to discredit it for what it easily has the potential to be. Uncharted took place on a deserted island. Who was there to shoot? Well it turned out, lots of people. Uncharted 2 another deserted island as well as many other locations, including an ancient abandoned monastery and the uninhabited land of Shambhala. Lots of people to shoot there, as well.

And also, as has been said before, this is much more a a teaser. Not too much of a story is INTENDED to be revealed. And despite Uncharted's having good stories, the story is only part of what drives Uncharted. Most of UC's strengths are voice acting, story telling, cinematography, writing, graphics, and the fast paced action. Open your fucking mind, man.

Man, that Mass Effect 3 trailer had me so pumped after watching it. The graphics look great as well, which I think has always been a strong point of Mass Effect. The ending of the second game (at the the direction I took it) definately has me pumped to finish the fight.

In a way, I think that this is the defining Sci-Fi game. Halo will always have a place in my heart, but I feel like the Mass Effect mythos is just amazing and the story is so involving. Halo's story is great, at least to me, but I sometimes feel like it drags just that little bit. Still one of the best Sci-Fi worlds in a game for sure, but I think Mass Effect has set such a great standard to go with a great game.

Also pumped for Arkham City. The Hugo Strange trailer was really good. Didn't realise it was the Batman trailer until I saw him fighting. Definately looking forward to those two games. Shame they delayed the Gears Of War 3 trailer though, I was really looking forward to seeing that.

As for Uncharted, don't have a playstation so don't care lol.

I'm not a big fan of Elder Scrolls gameplay, but story wise they've been on point.. I guess I got sentimental value for IV because of how they introduced it to the new environment... @ Don Panini as for Prototype 2, was the trailer good? I haven't exactly watched it yet, too busy with work and such. I wasn't sold on the first game, even though I bought it wasn't my favorite, but I'll definitely watch the trailer and let you know whats up in my podcast.
