Smith's 'Red State' to Film This Summer

Source: Shock Till You Drop

Shock Till You Drop reports that director Kevin Smith is preparing to start filming Red State this summer.

Smith said on his Twitter account, "I talk about lots of stuff I wanna do that either happens years later or never happens at all. Happy to report Red State is not the latter. First draft was dated 9/5/07. Looks like we start shooting this July. Took nearly three years, but we're finally gonna roll on Red."

He said in a previous interview that Red State "is definitely a 180 from everything else we've done including Zack and Miri [Make a Porno] but at the same time, it's not like a splatter film, it's not like slasher balls-to-the-wall gore, it's more unsettling and disturbing type of horror."

Oh my god! The dead have risen and they're voting Republican! =O

It sounds like an idea that could work, but Smith's recent movies are either painfully average or mind-numbingly awful.

What? I like this 180 idea

This could work if he doesn't take it uber-seriously I think. He should just make it a total throwback slasher ideally but evidently he doesn't want to do that. Not sure what to make of him trying something deeper but I look forward to it regardless.

I've read his comics (like I've been reading Batman: The Widening Gyre) and it convinces me that he can do something dark and non-comedic. He can definitely write it.

As for directing it, we'll see. I think he'll do just fine. Every director needs to step out of his comfort zone at some point.

finally hes working on this, new territory for him but I'll take the chance to see something different.

From what I've heard about the story, it sounds like it could be cool if done right (which I guess we'll see when it comes out since it's a new style for him), but I was hoping he'd take on "Ranger Danger and the Danger Rangers" next. I'm much more interested in seeing him tackle a sci-fi comedy take on the Rocketeer and Buck Rogers than a horror film.

Really looking forward to this, being a huge Smith fan that was left disappointed by Cop Out.

Y'know I want to fall back in love with Kevin Smith...but I've heard this "it's a complete 180 from my other stuff" only to find more dated Star Wars jokes. Stop it. No, really. Stop it. The prequels not only made Star Wars irrelevant but also dated it.

Now, this Red State has promise BUT....first draft was in 2007?!?!?! Knowing Smith, he's not going to update it, he's a pretty sloppy writer and director, which is fine IF you can get the slop right.

I don't understand why he doesn't do something on his home state of NJ. In the last 5 years crazy shit has gone down in that state. Start with the governor coming out and saying while married, he was fucking other men with his wife knowing about it. He resigns, his incumbent passes gay marriage but raises property taxes to the point where it exceeded NYC...and he gets voted out in favor of a Republican.

Now, tha's nuts and completely 180 from anything Smith can imagine in his mind.
