The television show Smallville was just renewed for a 10th season and what will be its final season. Now being such a big fan of the show I'm both surprised and pleased. Now usually when people see a show go on this long it loses the feeling that once made it great. Well usually its right but with Smallville I think it thrived among its badness. Now I admit there have been periods I've wanted to just give up on the show but I'm still sticking with it.

Smallville has evolved over its nine years. From the small town origins of Clark Kent and his high school years growing up to where we are now with Clark working at the Daily Planet with Lois and looking over the city of Metropolis donning the black and silver costume.Smallville I believe is the best Superman produced television series ever produced. Now growing up a big comic book fan and having read a lot of Superman in my life, I think this has captured a great, fun, and exciting spirit of the characters. Now I do love Adventures of Superman, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and Superman: The Animated Series produced by the great Bruce Timm, but I do think Smallville is the best of them. I loved many of these characters, loved many of the stories, how they respected the source material, and the little nods to the fans of the comics. This show also has the best cast of any the Superman shows.

Tom Welling has been perfect I think in the role of Clark Kent for the past nine years and can be an excellent Superman as shown in the recent ninth season. I think he has that same charm that Christopher Reeve had when we saw him in the first Superman movie as just like Reeve then, we had no idea who this kid was.Well we do now since he's played the part for the better part of a decade. It'll be interesting to see how his full on transition to Superman goes in the upcoming season. That's possibly the thing I'm most excited about for the final season.

I might get shit for this but whatever, Michael Rosenbuam is the best actor to ever portray Lex Luthor. He exhibited everything about him when he turns evil. Now I do love Lex as his evil self from season 5 and on until his departure at the end of the seventh season but for the first four season's as Clark's friend, I liked that a lot. We were really shown more to Lex than we ever knew and adding along his love-hate-HATE relationship with his dad Lionel, played masterfully by John Glover, about what drives him to become evil.

Jonathan Schnedier and Annette O'Toole as Jonathan and Martha Kent respectively were Clark's rocks for the first few years of the show. Schnedier having played Bo Duke on the original Dukes of Hazzard TV show was perfect to play Jonathan Kent having that good old boy charm and feeling and O'Toole was very nice as Martha who really more so than Jonathan was Clark's voice of reason on the show. She's been in the Superman universe before having played Lana Lang in Superman III. Yeah she played his mom and girlfriend. Let's move on from the creepiness. Now they've both left the series but their impact is still felt by me and many fans.

The ladies of Smallville have certainly given us great moments.

Lana Lang played by Kristin Kruek was the love of Clark Kent's for the first five years and wife of Lex Luthor's for the sixth year. They of course had finally gotten together in season 5 but we know that wasn't gonna last long because Lois will always be Clark's. But as predictable as the end result was gonna be it was pretty entertaing to watch. I know many of you didn't like her but I did for the most part and there were parts where I didn't like her but she did something that did again make me like her. She stayed on for the first seven years and popped up here and there in season 8 because she had left the show to go film Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. Not the best move but she can make it up by coming back for the final season.

Chloe Sullivan played by Allison Mack has always been my super geek crush since day one. She is so cut and adorable but wait, now she's a badass! Yeah I said it. Of all the character on Smallville, next to Clark and Lex of course, I think Chloe has had the best character transition. I mean for the first four seasons she tried to expose the meteor infected people to the public but since season 5 and on she's been helping them and has become emotionally connected to them. Yeah she of course pined for Clark and feuded with Lana but I think once that ended, she changed a lot more. Sure she still does the whole help reporting for Clark but she can hold her own in a fight. I love Mack and think Chloe is possibly the best female character ever on the show. I wonder is she's single.

Lois Lane played by Erica Durance is the most beautiful Lois Lane ever. Coming on in season 4 as a recurring character and Chloe's cousin (so all fantasies we'd have about them is therefore creepy and wrong), she's been a series regular since season 5 (another thing that made season 5 the best but that's for a different blog post). Right off the bat she was Lois and has never stopped since. Going places she's not supposed to, referring to Clark as Smallville, reporting whatever she damn well wants to report on, and being a bit of a bitch, but hey that's why we love Lois.

Now I'd go on about the many more characters but I'm saving that for another blog post about each season of Smallville which will also feature my favorite episodes of the show.

Smallville I look forward to seeing how you're gonna close out. Its certainly gonna be big.

I'd like to state that when the creators of Smallville presented the show they said it'd be reimagining the mythology of Superman. I knew what to expect with this coming in.

Well from what it sounds like the upcoming final season is gonna have the full on Superman we know and love and I'm a die hard Superman fan too and admit this show is stupid at times but for the most part its a great show to watch to me. Plus ever since season 8, it has been evolved into a Superman show.

I respect you too Jordan, and I admit I think after all this time it should have evolved into a Superman show, it feels like there's way too much filler in the series to delay the evolution of the character. It does irk me a lot not seeing it as Superman because by now I want to see Superman, not Clark anymore. I think the show has been preparing long enough that they should present and have a few adventures of him as Superman before the show ends, I also do want to see him in the traditional costume, I'm sorry if I seem too angry about it, it's just that I'm such a die hard Superman fan that I want to see fun and faithful Superman adventures without having to wait for a movie

HAHAHAHAHA Alright I walked right into that one I admit. Christian I really like you and respect you but your arguments make it sound like you're pissed its not a straight out Superman show when its about his origins and life before becoming Superman. I know that you know that's what the show is about but the way you're taking sorta sounds like you think it should be a much different show than it should be.

Well to paraphrase Leon, by making Jeph Loeb to help your point, look up "Backhanded Compliment" ;)

Well that would be cool if say Bruce Wayne was on an episode for the final season and I do want Lex back. He should come back at least if he's in one episode, make it the series finale.

I think it would have been cool Batman or Robin was in it I hope Lex in the last season.

Well I do think they've been developing Clark to becoming Superman and his surroundings as well for the ten years the show has been on. Now we don't know how hardcore geeky the writers are or if they even are geeks themselves. Now do I feel like the show is embarrassed to be based on a comic book? Eh no not really because well they's had comic book writers like Johns and Jeph Loeb, I'm saying that only for the sake of my point alright, write episodes of the series. Now I think more people are realizing that Comic Books are a respectable art form due to Iron Man and more so really, The Dark Knight. The show is about him BECOMING Superman. His life BEFORE becoming the Man of the Steele.

Plus I wanna state I LOOOOOOOOOVE Superman The Animated Series and loved it for its love of the character. I think the people behind Smallville do love Superman. Maybe not everyone but a respectable amount of people behind it do.

I do definitely agree with Geoff Johns being an amazing writer, but them saying "No tights" and them continuing to refuse showing Superman, it almost feels like they're embarrassed about it being based on a Comic Book. That's why I think it's an embarrassment to geeks because it is that kind of feeling like it's embarrassed about it's source material and that Comics aren't a respectable art form. It feels like an elaborate Andy Kaufman joke, like when they finally are going to show Superman in costume, the WB is going to force the show to black out until after he saves the day and out of costume. I mean the show has had TEN YEARS to develop Clark and his surroundings, TEN YEARS to make him ready to be a superhero, and this is the best they could do? It's like I'm saying, it's a bad case of Comic Book blue balls, you see Metropolis, the Daily Planet, and everyone else in Superhero costumes, the only thing that's missing is Superman, and this is a show about Superman. And yes I'm comparing it with Twilight, because of how Anti-Comic Book it is like the way how Twilight is so Anti-Monster.

Well Christian I respect you a lot but really man? Twilight? You're gonna compare this to Twilight? Plus the teen drama thing was annoying at times and that was only for the first four seasons when he was in high school. Now as for talking about the mythology, I do agree at times I'm shaking my head going What the fuck is going on? and think they don't care. But I do feel the show is about him becoming Superman ever since season 8 with him starting to work at The Daily Planet. I felt like that was the first big step toward that. I did however not like that Doomsday was used that season as I felt like he should become Superman in the final season and you have Doomsday in the final episodes and do battle with Superman. Plus Christian I wanna point out the creators of the show left the series after season 7 and well the creators aren't there to contribute to the show anymore, only who took over as showrunner for them and the writing staff. I feel like the people behind the show really do care about Superman and well Geoff Johns wrote two of the absolute best episodes on there as he was written great Superman comics and so obviously he cares about Superman and Smallville.
