SkellingJack's Alice in Wonderland review

Now when it comes to directors, one of my favorite directors out there is Tim Burton. Now before all of you Tim Burtons haters start criticizing me, I will say that Tim Burton isn't the best director out there. However I have really enjoyed a ton of the films he has made in the past. While not all of them were great, there were more that I enjoyed than disliked, and Alice in Wonderland is definately in the category of a film I liked from Tim Burton.

Alice in Wonderland was a very enjoyable film for me but I it does have it's flaws which I will explain later in the review.

First off most people whenever they loved or hated it said that the visuals in this is easily the best part of the movie and they are right. Tim Burton is always well know to have visually stunning and this one is no expection. The environments look great and they also did an incredible job on animating the characters such as the Chersire Cat, the Caterpiller and so on. And the 3-D while it's no AVATAR, it is still pretty impresive 3-D and if you are going to see Alice, you have to see in 3-D to get the full visual exprience.

The acting in this is also pretty solid as well. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter do a great job playing as the Mad Hatter and the Red Queen. Even if you are tired of Depp and Carter being in Tim Burton's movies, you still have to admit they did a good job playing their part. The voice acting is top notched as well, Stephan Fry, Christopher Lee, Alan Rickman and the rest of the voice cast do a Great job and give a lot of personality to the characters they are voicing. Mia Wasikowska also did a good job too, granted she was weak at times and she not as good as some of the other actors here but she was still good. The performances in the movie were all good however I did thought they could of done more with Anne Hathaway's Character though.

Finally, I get to the story which a lot of people have been complaining that the story was Bad and too be honest I didn't think it was bad at all. Granted it wasn't an amazing plot but It wasn't as bad as the plot for something like Transformers 2 or New Moon. The characters were not hatable and It wasn't convoluted or confussing to the point it didn't make any sense, and for Alice in Wonderland that's saying something. Plus I think the main reason why the plot is better than those films is because of the writing. While some people complained about the dialogue, I thought the dialogue was clever and enjoyable. Granted the dialogue is not as good as something like Inglourious Basterds but I still liked it enough to enjoy it. I think the biggest problem with this movie is that there were just some scenes that were just plain unecessary like the break dance near the end but those scenes were not bad enough to ruin the film for me.

Over all, I really enjoyed this movie. While it's not as great as some of Tim Burton's other films like Ed Wood or Sweeney Todd, but I do think it is a lot better than Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride and Planet of the Apes. Trust me, This movie is no where near as bad as Planet of the Apes despite what the Tim Burton haters say. Alice in Wonderland was a fun and enjoyable film for me and while it wasn't as good as Shutter Island, I still thought it was a good way to start off 2010. So if you're a Tim Burton fan like me, you should definately see it, but if you're not atleast check it out to see why a raven is like a written desk.

Wait. There's a break dancing scene at the end of the film?

Now I have to see this. I want to know if the film is a train wreck before or after that moment comes.

i saw alice in wonderland tonight, and to me it was a low rental, the only thing i really liked was Helena Bonham Carter as the red queen, she was great but everything felt shallow and i am really getting sick of Tim Burton's "style", it is just annoying me now and also that awful, out of context, breakdancing scene. I would've never watched that movie but my girlfriend wanted to see it so i did it......out of love

Good review, even though I disagree. I didn't like Johnny Depp in this mainly because I thought he couldn't stick to an accent and I didn't think he had much of a personality. My main problem with the film was that I never really got invested in the story. The entire time I felt very detached from the characters and story and found the film to be dull overall. Also, I didn't care for the 3D, and I saw this on IMAX 3D and was not impressed at all. As an added bonus, I think this was the first time while watching a 3D movie that I got a headache. But I did like the visuals, Helena Bonham Carter, and the voice actors who played the animated characters. I would actually give this maybe a high rental. I enjoyed reading your review and thought it was very well-written on the whole.

I honsetly gave it a 6/10 (Low Matine). Not terrible, but not that good either.

At least you took it from a fair approach, though.

Good review, reflected most of my opinions. I really get annoyed when people say that one moment ruined the entire movie for them (here being the dance scene at the end). This was hinted at earlier in the movie and I knew it was coming and I found it quite silly and humorous. It was unnecessary but it's Alice in Wonderland, what did you expect?

@Amia
It's not horrible because it didn't ruin the film for me but it was very unecessary

everyone keeps talking about this break dance scene at the end.Is really that bad???
Comment by Holy Beans Batman on March 8, 2010 at 9:59pm
i saw it. Liked it okay.
I had my issues with the Damn dance scene at the end, but i had one more problem with it.

Why the hell did Johnny Depp keep switching between The Mad Hatter, a Scotsman, and Captain Jack Sparrow in the movie?
