In 2006, director Christophe Gans brought the immensely popular Konami video game 'Silent Hill' to the big screen. The result was a viscerally upsetting horror film with stark, twisted imagery. Since then, there have been whispers and rumors of a followup film, but year after year passed with no sequel. Then things slowly but surely got moving on the next chapter, and now, finally, 'Silent Hill: Revelation' has secured a distribution partner and a release date. Open Road films, the company behind Joe Carnahan's 'The Grey' has purchased the US distribution rights to the film and set it to hit theaters on October 26th. It will therefore be competing in this year's Halloween rush with the likes of Paramount's 'Paranormal Activity 4.' 'Silent Hill: Revelation,' which will apparently be in 3D, sees the return of Sean Bean, Deborah Kara Unger, and Radha Mitchell from the first installment while adding to the mix Kit Harington from 'Game of Thrones.' Michael J. Basset will be directing this time around.
While I wasn't the world's biggest fan of 'Silent Hill,' I will grant that it featured some truly disturbing and absolutely haunting sequences that resonated with me even though I have never played any of the games in the series. I'm interested to see what fresh, unspeakable horrors are unleashed in the sequel. Of course, the whole 3D thing is a bit troubling, but as long as there's also a 2D viewing option, that matters very little. The biggest reason I'm excited for this film, however, is not its content nor even the 'Game of Thrones' reunion with Bean and Harrington, it's the man sitting in the director's chair. Back in 2009, Michael J. Bassett directed 'Solomon Kane,' a supernatural period adventure flick based on the Robert E. Howard graphic novel. How this film did not get nationwide distribution is beyond me, it is an absolute blast with plenty of dark elements as well. I'm jazzed to see what he can do playing in this sandbox.
What do you guys think? Are you interested in a 'Silent Hill' sequel? Do you see yourself catching it in theaters this Halloween season?

Comment by Omar R. on April 21, 2012 at 3:55pm If they can make a shit load of Resident Evil films, I'm sure they can make a sequel to this one. Silent Hill was a bit mediocre, but at least had atmosphere and some substance.

Comment by GodDamnRobots on April 19, 2012 at 8:58pm Michael J. Bassett did some really good, solid horror movies. Watch "Deathwatch" and you'll get plenty of Silent Hill imagery out of it even though it preceded the games.
I trust him way more than Gans.
