Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is based on a graphic novel by Bryan Lee O’Malley, I personally never read the comic, but I do hear very good things about it. I’ve never seen video game style directing ever before in a movie, and it really worked a lot in this movie, and this is only one of the many reasons why I love this movie. I really didn’t know what to expect out of Michael Cera, I don’t like him as a actor, because he plays the same role every time, now in this movie he still plays the same sarcastic, goody Michael Cera, but he was actually funny, and he played a real character this time around, and he was great for this role, he really surprised me on how good he did, Chris Evans was phenomenal as well, I thought they showed just enough of him, not too much, nor too little, and he really had one of the more funnier moments in the movie, he was very funny, another good performance was Jason Schwartzman, he was casted perfect for his role, Mary Elizabeth Winstead was very hot in this movie, and she also was casted perfect for the role. The visual effects were one of the best visual effects I seen all year, they were really great, and also the fight scenes were outstanding too, I really was amazed with all the fights, but the only problem I had with the fights were that they were getting repetitive towards the end, but that doesn’t take away anything from how badass the fights scenes were. I really loved the hell out of this movie, but the only problem that’s keeping this movie from having a perfect score is the first 20 minutes were very boring, but when Michael Cera has to fight the first evil-ex boyfriend that’s when the movie blasts off, and never slows down after that, and one other problem was the script, but all the visual effects made up for it.
Edgar Wright had so many brilliant ideas in this movie, and the one that sticks with me the most is the video game concept, I really loved how when you see Michael Cera punch somebody you see all the words pop out, and also the old fashion video game noises, and when Michael Cera kills enemies coins fall down, but the one scene that resembles a video game a lot is at the end when Michael Cera dies, and he replays the final boss again, and he skims through everybody to fight the boss again, and this time knows how to defeat him, and that reminded me a lot like a video game, because when you die, and restart a level you go really fast, so you can hurry up, and fight the boss again; that scene made me laugh a lot.
Overall every fight scene was totally badass, and the visual effects were really outstanding, Scott Pilgrim VS. The World is one of my favorite movies of 2010.
