Sci-Fi Version Of 'Moby Dick' Gets Financing
Continuing the trend of re-imagined literary classics, fairy tales, and historical figures, prepare yourselves for the ultimate whale tale. Lynne Ramsay ('We Need to Talk About Kevin'), along with her writing partner Rory Kinnear, is in the process of penning the script for 'Mobius,' a science-fiction take on Herman Melville's classic novel. Ramsay is also set to direct 'Mobius,' though it was initially difficult to see how the budget would come through for the film. But now, producer Scott Steindorff, and his Scott Pictures, has come onto the project as principle financier. 'Mobius,' said to be a deep-space psychological action thriller, will center on a revenge-fueled captain taking his crew on a suicide mission to find and control a dangerous alien. Scott Pictures previously produced 'The Lincoln Lawyer' and will also be backing Ramsay's 'Jane Got A Gun' starring Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender.
Call me...interested. This sounds like a nice spin on that book my English teacher made me read. It also sounds oddly similar to an episode of 'Futurama' called, ahem, "Mobius Dick." I'm not insinuating that Ramsay is stealing the idea from the good folks over at 'Futurama,' but it can't helped but be mentioned. Obviously Ramsay's film will have a strikingly different tone than that hilarious episode of Matt Groening's TV series. I am looking forward to seeing how the themes of Melville's tale are transported to a more interstellar setting. The danger of obsession is a pretty universal moral and one can't help but wonder how the whale will be transformed into an imposing cosmic being. Moreover, Ramsay's diversity of projects is really fascinating. 'We Need to Talk About Kevin' was a twisted, bleak, gut-wrenching tale centering on a parent's worst nightmare. From there she's doing a western, and then a sci-fi remake of a 19th Century novel? If nothing else, you can't fault her for being shackled to one genre.
What do you guys think? Does this project interest you? Does anyone remember that 'Futurama' episode?
