Schwarzenegger Will Return For 'Terminator 5'

Much like its titular robot hitman, 'The Terminator' franchise has proven near impossible to kill. McG sure tried to destroy it with 'Terminator: Salvation,' as did a rights issue just a few months ago. However, Megan Ellison has been rather determined to get a new movie produced; scaring up over $20 million for the rights. Then just last week, she and her brother David hired Patrick Lussier and Laeta Kalogridis to write 'Terminator 5.' And now, a figure from franchise past appears to be returning. While promoting his latest film 'The Last Stand,' Arnold Schwarzenegger began listing for the attending press all of his upcoming projects, and 'Terminator 5' found its way onto that list. It is not certain whether Arnold would occupy a major role in the film or something more akin to a cameo. This is not the only franchise to which Arnie is scheduled to return. On that same list were projects like 'Triplets' and the new Conan movie.

Here is a situation wherein reason must trump fandom. The immediate reaction to this news would be to rejoice at the return of the original cybernetic assassin. However, let's assume for a moment that Arnold will be playing the lead role, the guy is beyond too old to lead an action-heavy sci-fi flick. As much as I was looking forward to 'The Last Stand,' it was clear from the fact that a majority of his stunts were based around sitting in a car or moving somewhat quickly from one place to another during a firefight that he has lost a step or two in his old age. Not even with a cadre of stunt doubles do I see how he could possibly manage the physical demands of a film like this. Even if his T-101 would only make a cameo, these are robots for crying out loud. They don't age! So seeing Arnie's wrinkled visage as T-101 even for a moment would make absolutely no sense. My guess is that it'll be more like his cameo in 'The Rundown;' a brief glimpse of him as a background character in a sort of passing of the torch moment. Anything more than that I feel is categorically unwise. Their only other option would be to pursue the same CG approach that allowed for the brief reappearance of Arnold's T-101 in 'Terminator Salvation,' but I can't imagine the audience having to endure that for an entire film.

What do you guys think? Is Arnold's return a good thing for the franchise or a desperation move? Do you think he will have a major role?

The only thing with having him show up as a resistance fighter captured to model the T-101 on, would be that it would have to take place before Terminator: Salvation given we saw the T-101 with Arnold's face in that film. Given that any scene he's in would indicate it was either a flashback and as such probably just a cameo, or that the entire film would be taking place before Terminator: Salvation, and I think we're all sick of the storyline of this franchise failing to move forward. I liked Terminator: Rise of the Machines, but it was a missed opportunity for the franchise to move forward into the future of the story to show the war between man and machine's that were only hinted at in Reese's flashbacks or other peoples dreams/nightmares, instead opting to just rehash the plot of Terminator 2

Terminator: Salvation also didn't go as far forward in the story as I thought it should have, and was weighed down by the plot of Worthington's character. I can't speak for everyone, but it seems to me that most people would just want to see a film about the actual war and man's final victory over the machines, complete with a final scene where Connor sends Kyle Reese back in time to protect his mother in 1984.

I personally think, while certainly not as good as the first two, Salvation was miles better than T-3.
Since I only knew her from the corny but fun Mortal Kombat TV Show, I never could take Kristanna Loken seriously...

I fucking love the Terminator movies (Salvation was kinda only cool once though). I feel like marathoning them now

@Pumooo

Yeah, but since that scene cut they can make their own canon :-)

Don't do it Arnold. Show some will power. You said the last one sucked, and you were right.

I agree with Allan Jensen.

I could see Arnold returning to the Terminator franchise as the man that inspired the look of the T-800 series of cyborgs by SkyNet. While the cyborgs do not age (hence CGI clones of a younger Scharzenegger), the original person may have to be rescued/protected by the resistance as a key story point.

I love Arnold, but his return seemed unnecessary. But the idea thats been floating around seems like a somewhat decent explaination for his comeback. If they were to cast him as a resistance solider and have skynet capture him and make T-101's in his image, that could work. Like I mentioned it's not good one, but it's somewhat decent... Thats the only reason I can think of for having the austrian oak back in the Terminator films.
