It's halloween time, so it's time for yet another SAW film.
We're now on the 6th part of this series,
and i know i'm not the only one who has been watching the slow decline of these films over time.
I found those last two that came out almost unbearable if you try to invest any actual interest in the plot. Because it falls into that whole idea where they try and make the story dramatic by adding flashbacks and lack-luster plot twists. They seem to have lost the whole idea of the plot entirely, and fallen into a down-hill slide.
But! they have taken that fall to their advantage, and caught the upswing with this new addition! :)
Here is a breakdown of the quality of the series, in a hierarchy of superiority...
1. SAW 3
2. SAW 1 & SAW 2 are tied
3.
SAW 6
4. SAW 4 (huge jump down implied)
5. SAW 5 (licking the floor at this point)
SAW 6 is focused around the owner of a powerful insurance company that is known for turning down very sick patient's medical coverage. And detective Hoffman is using the legacy and instructions of jigsaw to help the business owner learn the true value of life and how he looks at his clients. At the same time, you take a step into Hoffman's life and watch the set up he has slowly unravel before him, with nothing but his own cold heart and malice to blame.
The stage is set early in the film, showing the obvious political message behind the traps and victims.
All of the people who are tested are in either a loan or health insurance career, and have used their position to hurt others. And on this occasion, the challenges they are put up against actually reflect their crime. And all is done without sending the whole torture-porn message. The difference this time is that the victims don't depend on their own strength and endurance as much as they have to rely on their boss (the head of the insurance company) to learn the lessons he is being taught and help them. But, it isn't shoved in your face the whole time. and though hard to watch, it has a purpose behind the gore.
But, *sigh*... some of the original problems still have continued.
I know I can't be the only one who is growing more and more sick of the whole cop attitude that movies try to push.
They do it by having them stare each other in the eyes and speaking their lines like their reading them right from a piece of paper.
All wearing the same colors and trying to push the badass demeanor.
It's just irritating at this point, because you've seen it SO many times before.
It could still be passable if done correctly and purposefully, but it's not like that here.
Overall, the political message blends well with the plot. And if you enjoy a bit of blood and can gat past a bit of bad acting on the police's part, then you will enjoy this.
6 out of 10
