Back when I wrote
my review for "Spider-Man Magazine #3", I stated that while they were flawed, I still liked Marvel's youth oriented comics mainly for what they were trying to do. I now feel the need to take that statement back because some of the Marvel kiddy comics that I've read since that review give off the impression that they aren't trying hard enough. Take this book, for example, which is a huge disappointment.
You see, I was actually looking forward to the "Marvel Adventures Super Heroes" comics (this graphic novel contains the first four issues) especially after reading a preview comic that I got last year for Free Comic Book Day. That issue was a lot of fun. Yes, it was silly, but it mixed humor and action very well and made one think that this newest entry into the Marvel Adventures line would be a promising one. But, like most advertisements, it was misleading because, judging from this digest trade, it just isn't cutting it.
Sure, there's still humour, but they forgot the action. At least the kind we all want. Instead, most of the stories in this book involve our three heroes getting into extremely ridiculous situations that are played solely for laughs and lack any real excitement. In fact, it's so unexciting that it's not even very funny.
I mean, I don't want to see the trio taking care of Hercules' (giant) dogs or taking on extreme sports. I want to see them taking on bad guys while throwing in some well timed quips here and there (that's what the free comic was all about). Now, there is one story that fits that description, but even it falls short due to how stupid the villain's plot is.
So yeah, bottom line is that I didn't really like this book. Maybe little kid's will and that's cool, but they could do better. In fact, I suggest they check out what DC has to offer. Their youth based comics are better by comparison. (And here I was talking shit about them in the aforementioned review. Shows what I know.)
Well, that's it. My first ever negative review. Comments are appreciated and if you'd like, I'd gladly review that preview comic.
See ya..
