Samuel L. Jackson Joins 'Robocop' Remake

As you've probably heard, Paul Verhoeven's 'Robocop' is getting a 21st century facelift. MGM and Sony are putting together a remake of the 1987 sci-fi cult classic, which will star Joel Kinnaman ('The Killing') and be directed by Brazil's Jose Padilha ('Elite Squad: The Enemy Within'). The production recently added some firepower to its cast when it was announced that Gary Oldman ('The Dark Knight') would be coming aboard. As if that weren't geek cred enough, now the 'Robocop' remake has landed none other than Samuel L. Jackson. Nick FuryJackson will be playing media mogul Pat Novak who is a formidable presence in the world of the film. The new 'Robocop' is looking to begin shooting in September in Toronto and will hopefully be out by next summer.

As much as we tend to get up in arms about remakes, I gotta say this one is looking more and more promising. I like Padilha as a director, I like the conceptual direction in which he wants to take 'Robocop,' and the addition of Oldman and Jackson (which incidentally sounds like the greatest and most badass law firm in the world) only furthers my optimism. I don't remember a Pat Novak in Verhoeven's 'Robocop.' Obviously, the remake doesn't have to, nor really should it, be a paint-by-numbers, shot-for-shot recreation of the original film, but it does raise some interesting questions as to how the character may fit into the plot. Verhoeven's film did use the media as the chief delivery system for his signature brand of satire. He deconstructed much of the decade in those cutaways and fake commercials, and it'll be interesting to see how Padilha utilizes the media in this day and age. One thing I think we can all agree on is that Sam L. is probably not going to be the "I'll buy that for a dollar" guy.

What do you guys think? Are you excited Jackson is on board? What are your thoughts on the remake in general?

Personally, I think it'll be a crappy movie. Just because you hire A-list actors doesn't mean you're getting an A-List movie. And if Samuel Jackson should play any role in this movie, it should be the desk sergeant from the original (Robert DoQui played Sergeant Warren Reed). My guess, judging by the names of the characters Oldman and Jackson are play (Norton and Novak), they're getting all new characters. But I hope for the best.

This could go either way. It better not have anything other than an R rating or it'll be shit. If there is any kind of chesse ball comedy it'll be shit. I'm holding out hope that the Dark Knight has influenced studios into accepting that people will pay to see summer blockbusters with serious undertones and an adult oriented storyline. I think Kinnaman will do a good job though. From what I've seen on the Killing he has some skills.

He's going to be the police captain because movie 101 tells us the police captain is always black!

Fuck yeah! When I first heard about robocop reboot I was expecting it to be a shit movie. With the news I just read on this page, I went from thinking shit movie to Holy Shit their making FUCKING ROBOCOP the right way. Fuck yes.

I love that they got Samual L. Mothafucking Jackson onto the cast with Gary Oldman which makes the movie look promising.
Now two problems however.
1. Look at most of the 21st centuries remakes. What do you see? Shitty quick money grabbers.
2. Are they going to coompletely change the Robocop look? I'm sure that they're going to go with something like the Accelerator suits from the first G.I. Joe movie. That could be cool, if they don't go overboard with it.

Robocop was a reaction to the conservative anger at 80's crime waves in cities; it's a different world now so it's harder for the movie's subtext to resonate with an audience.

Fuck this remake, but if I I have to see it, it'll be just for Oldman and Jackson.
