Sacha Baron Cohen signs on to play Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury

Get ready to start singing “We Are the Champions.” Sacha Baron Cohen has signed on to play Freddie Mercury in a biopic about the flamboyant and dynamic lead singer of Queen, Graham King’s GK Films announced via press release. (Deadline first reported the news.) I have no idea whether Baron Cohen can actually pull off the singing: He acquitted himself well enough in 2007′s Sweeney Todd, but Mercury had some of the most powerful vocal chords in rock history, as anyone who’s ever embarrassed themselves trying to sing along with “Bohemian Rhapsody” can attest. But he certainly looks the part. (See: left.) Put a big ol’ mustache on him and he’s either a Kazakh TV reporter named Borat or the spitting image of Freddie Mercury. And Mercury is certainly an intriguing subject for a biopic: an unlikely pop star who strutted the stage like a peacock, but kept his complicated personal life largely a mystery until his death from complications from AIDS in 1991.

What do you think of this casting? Are you excited to see Baron Cohen try a more dramatic role than we’ve seen before? Can you imagine anyone else playing Freddie Mercury?

As a die - hard Queen fan, I have been waiting a long time for a movie about Freddie. I really do hope that Sacha does justice to Freddie and play him as realistically as possible, maybe even showing some sides of his personal life. Not just so that people can learn more about Freddie but also to allow Sacha to break away from his usual comic roles and actually be known as a brilliant serious actor, which I'm sure he's extremely capable of. I think Baron Cohen's voice is good (as shown in Sweeney Todd, in which he was excellent) and I'm sure through computers they can edit his voice to sound perfectly like Freddie's.

I can't wait for more news and I really hope to attend the premiere in London when it comes to England :)
