You know what we haven't seen in a while? A vampire movie! Oh wait no, we get like two a year. Well it looks like Russell Crowe wants a piece of that action as he is purportedly in talks with Warner Brothers to star in 'Harker,' which would reimagine Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' from the perspective of the character Jonathan Harker. Instead of a lawyer, as he was in the novel, this time around Harker would be a detective from Scotland Yard investigating Drac's bloody activities. 'Harker' will be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, through his company Appian Way, and was at one time helmed by Jaume Collet-Serra before he left to pursue the now frozen 'Akira.' The idea now is to have Collet-Serra return to 'Harker' with Crowe in the title role. No official deals have been made on either side of that equation.
I don't care how many vampire movies we get, if someone actually takes the time to craft an interesting story or clever twist on the genre, I will happily see it. 'Harker's conceit doesn't sound like the most creative alteration of the progenitor vampire story, but one that at least changes it up to the point that we won't just get the Van Helsing vs. Dracula construct that usually dominates period vampire tales. I like the idea of someone exploring the real-world forensic aspects of Dracula's deeds; sort of a vamp version of 'Sleepy Hollow' I suppose. It does strike me as odd that Warner Brother just canceled Alex Proyas' 'Paradise Lost' as well as Collet-Serra's own 'Akira' for budget reasons only to turn around and green-light something like 'Harker.' It could just be that they are trying to get something else for Collet-Serra to do that can double as a test to see if he can actually bring a movie in under budget, but that's just an assumption. The recent purge at Warner Brothers does have me concerned as to how meager they plan on making 'Harker's budget. Not that a movie need carry an enormous price tag to be successful mind you, but I'd rather they didn't skimp on something like this at the expense of production value especially given that this is a genre on its last legs.
What do you guys think? Are you interested in seeing 'Harker?' Is Russell Crowe right for the part?

Comment by Majin B-mag on February 12, 2012 at 7:50pm Maybe this idea could work, but if it's executed perfectly; ideas like these put to film can either be really good or bad. If everything's done right this could be a really good film. And could we get vampires that are weak against churches, crosses, garlic, etc these days?! This whole 'new' rule of the vampire mythology (ex: true blood, 2011's fright night) is becoming a cliche.

Comment by Cranky Old Dude on February 11, 2012 at 10:25am Put a stake in the whole Vampire thing, please. let the whole thing sleep the sleep of the dead for about a decade, then bring the dead back to life, because right now they suck. They want to try to revive Lestat also (Tales of the Body Thief) and while I am a big fan of the whole Anne Rice series and of Ron Howard's work I am simply burned out....But hey, I am just being "Cranky"
Comment by Lawparte on February 11, 2012 at 5:29am Would have been a good launchpad for an occult spin-off too.
Comment by Lawparte on February 11, 2012 at 5:27am Warner Bros. should have gone the whole nine yards and combined the Dracula storyline with the Sherlock Holmes franchise if they wanted Vlad to fight a detective. If anyone can do that, it's them, with the RDJ series doing so well. 'Sherlock Holmes vs The Prince of Darkness' or something on those lines. It's normal for franchises to delve into fantasy/the occult during their third outing to keep the series fresh so it would make sense at this point.
Comment by David on February 10, 2012 at 10:33pm 1) Why make him a detective? What's wrong with being a lawyer? They're just ripping off the Sleepy Hollow premise.
2) Isn't Crowe a little old for the role of Harker? I'm sure he'd fit the role fine, but still.
Comment by Lunatik on February 10, 2012 at 1:56pm Sounds like theyre trying to make that character into van Helsing..i guess this wont be too faithful to the book.
Comment by Haze-man on February 10, 2012 at 1:36pm Harker was my fav part of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
