Eternally calm and gentle-natured actor Russell Crowe has signed on to Universal's Oscar-bait film adaptation of the Broadway musical 'Les Miserables'. Crowe will be playing the main antagonist Inspector Javert, alongside Hugh Jackman as protagonist Jean Valjean and Anne Hathaway as the character Fantine

The Tony-award winning musical adapted from the book by Victor Hugo, 'Les Miserables' follows the lives of several French characters in the early nineteenth century, ending with the student rebellions of 1832. Valjean, arrested for stealing bread to feed his family and kept for 19 years due to a series of escape attempts, is released from prison and immediately runs afoul of Inspector Javert - a man intent to put Valjean back behind bars. Over the course of seventeen years, the two men engage in a cat-and-mouse struggle as Valjean changes his identity and flees justice. Crowe - who is the lead singer for his band '30 Odd Foot of Grunts' - is expected to also sing for the role (rather than have another vocalist overdubbed in post-production).

Universal has scheduled the film for release on December 7th, 2012 (smack dab in the middle of Oscar season) so for lovers of musical theater and sweeping historic dramas about loss and romance, this is the film for you. For the rest of you (who will likely be dragged to this by your significant others), just keep thinking about it as a civil rebellion film starring Jor El, Wolverine, and Catwoman and you should be okay.

This remake, I don't mind as much; but I agree it probably won't score as well as its predecessors...

@ SuperbadMike you're right that would be a pretty great idea. Idina Menzel as Fantine and Lea Michel as Cosette because in my opinion, in most productions Cosette is usually the weakest character but I think Michel could do her right and having Menzel as the mom would just cause all kinds of buzz because of how identical they are. Then again, they look Jewish (or are they actually jewish?) which I don't know if that'd take away from their characters or not but we'll see

Oddly I would have thought Crowe would be Valjean

They'll never top Liam Neeson and Geoffrey Rush. Those two didn't even NEED to sing; even without the music they rocked.

As for cast of the musical I like the 25th anniversary cast I think it was with Alfred Giovanni Roncalli Boe and Norman Lewis.

He is not a big guy at all but I think made a very good Jean Valjean. And Hugh Jackman is a big guy so I am sure he will look the part and play it well. They may have to adjust some of the songs for his pitch range.

Something very cool and kind of funny

Norm Lewis as Triton

They'd better cast Lea Michele as Cosette. And screw Anne Hathaway, they should have gotten Idina Menzel for Fantine. Michele and Menzel already proved that they can sing I Dreamed A Dreamed amazingly together on Glee.

Haha... greatest piece of artwork of all time. That's hilarious. The book? Possibly. The musical? Minus a few massively awesome songs, it's still just a musical. People are either going to like it (because they like musicals) or they won't (because they don't like musicals). That's like saying that a rap song is the greatest song of all time. Sure... to people who like rap. The rest of us? Couldn't be chuffed.

I think the cast is meh-ish (can't stand Hugh Jackman), but Anne Hathaway has a pretty decent set of pipes and should be able to nail I Dreamed a Dream. Or if she can't, they'll just autotune her.

Brianna is absolutely right, they got the goddamn casting backwards.

To see what embodies a great Javert look no further than Philip Quast. Stars- Les Miserables- Javert by Philip Quast - YouTube

To see the proper Jean Valjean there's only Colm Wilkinson. Colm Wilkinson - Les Bring Him Home
