In case you missed the flurry of social media reactions, something quite interesting happened on Conan O'Brien's show last night. With jazz flute in hand, onto the set walked Ron Joseph Aaron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) from Adam Mckay's 2004 comedy 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.' After a rousing demonstration of his flautist abilities, and some jabs at Conan, Burgundy announced that he and Paramount had come to an agreement and that there will in fact be an 'Anchorman 2.' Listen to the wolverine-tamer himself drop this megaton shock bomb in the below video.
So there you have it, straight from the source. All kidding aside, while this was an interesting and entertaining method of revealing this news, several questions remain. For example: why? I'm not so much asking why they're making a sequel, the box office grosses for the first film are all the explanation needed there; not to mention the second life it took on once it hit DVD. But why wait eight years to do it? I know Will's been busy, but rumor has it he and McKay have been trying to get this off the ground for a long time. Had it gotten a green light sooner, he might of turned down other things in order to reprise his role as the 70s era, super chauvinist newscaster. Will the whole cast be returning along with Ferrell? According to Deadline, Steve Carrell, Paul Rudd, and David Koechner will all be back. As to the writing/directing duties, Adam McKay confirmed that himself via his twitter account,
"A few people questioning if Anchorman 2 is 100% for sure happening. Let me assure and assuage: it is. We're writing now and we shoot in Feb"
The "we" of the writing process being he and Ferrell. So while there's no release date yet, expect 'Anchorman 2'to begin filming in February 2013. That leaves you plenty of time to go buy...new suits!
What do you guys think? Are you excited about another 'Anchorman' film?

Comment by Jay Fro on March 31, 2012 at 10:05pm Bring it on. Gonna have to do something with Applegate's character. To Eric, Stepbrothers wasn't that good. Yes it's funny but his endings are never that good. A bit overboard. The Other Guys wasn't good at first but gets funnier every time I watch it now I love it. I hope Will doesn't become like Sandler. Losing his touch. I have faith in Will though. Sandler is done. He was brilliant then Grown Ups made me wanna puke. Hopefully Will hits a home run with Anchorman 2.
Comment by Eric Pilotti on March 31, 2012 at 1:05pm everybody disses on the Anchorman and Stepbrothers but correct me if im wrong but those are some of the most quotable movies of our modern comedies
Comment by Tom on March 30, 2012 at 7:57am Am I the only one who thinks the first Anchorman wasn't that great to begin with?
Comment by Kroaxs on March 30, 2012 at 6:16am April Fools?
Comment by Joe on March 30, 2012 at 5:20am I think it would be great if the movie takes place ten years later and has Ron breaking the news on Cold War Hysteria. In the last film, they do imply that he's still an anchorman into the future.
Comment by Calvin on March 30, 2012 at 12:37am Did you see that black guy's eye light up at the announcement? Fucking funny.
Comment by Y2G on March 29, 2012 at 11:06pm As much as I love the first, some movies dont need sequals. I think this is one of them but ill keep an open mind to it.
Comment by Killboy Powerhead on March 29, 2012 at 11:00pm As long as step brothers never gets a sequel I'll be happy.
Comment by The Dubya on March 29, 2012 at 10:52pm Eh, I was more of a Ricky Bobby fan more than a Ron Burgundy fan...
Honestly, I really don't see what he could possible do to expand on ANY of his mid-2000's hits like Anchorman or Talledega Nights or those kind of movies. They were kind of one note gags with one note characters that had their little character arcs completed among all the hijinks and what not, so hearing about a sequel makes me think they're just trying to catch lighting in a bottle twice and it's gonna be a Hangover 2 sorta thing where they over do it with the "Remember how funny it was in the first movie? WELL HERE IT IS AGAIN!"
Unless Will Ferrell has grown into a more clever comedian than we give him credit for and comes up with a legit reason to bring back or "update" a character not even a decade old yet and have a reason for his big screen return, this could very easily fall into the same pitfalls as most comedy sequels.
