The legendary fugitive director was finally apprehended by law officials for his Statutory Rape charge from back in 1978, wherein he drugged and sexually assaulted a 13 year old girl, Samantha Geimer.

While Polanski has successfully stayed outside of US jurisdiction since then, avoiding trial for his crime, he finally made a fatal mistake on Sunday, September 27th, 2009. Traveling to Switzerland to attend the Zurich Film Festival for an honorary award, Swiss officials arrested him at the airport for the American charge, on the grounds of Switzerland's extradition treaty with the USA, dating back some 60 years.
At this time, however, the Swiss officials have yet to reveal anything more on the issue.
Personally, I think this is a good thing. Regardless of how long ago the crime was, Polanski deserves to serve the full sentence for the atrocious thing he did those decades ago. Some of you may remember my previous post on the problem, and my views have not changed since. It doesn't matter if he's a cultural icon or whether he's directed some of the greatest movies of all time. He committed a TERRIBLE crime. This wasn't some run-red-light traffic bumble. He, a grown man, used booze and drugs to take physical advantage of a 13 year old girl, who was just conscious enough to realize what was happening to her, yet unable to stop it.
This policy should extend to anyone. James Cameron is one of my favorite directors ever, but if he slipped a roofie to a 9 year old girl and had his way with her, I'd be as vindictive on that instance as I am on this one.
Here's hoping the issue is resolved properly and justly.
