Rob Zombie Signs On To...A Hockey Movie?

Rob Zombie (formerly the lead singer of the band White Zombie), made his directorial debut in 2003 with 'House of 1000 Corpses.' From that point on, he's been garnering largely mixed reactions from critics and horror fans alike. This divergence of response only became more pronounced when he remade one of the greatest horror films of all time: 'Halloween.' Now it looks as if Zombie wants to venture into a different genre. He has just singed on to write, produce, and direct 'Broad Street Bullies.' The film will center on the 1970s Philadelphia Flyers, a hockey team as renowned for inflicting pain as they were winning championships. Zombie has described the project as 'Rocky' meets 'Boogie Nights' on ice. Comparisons to 'Slap Shot' are also unavoidable. Zombie apparently has the support of the Flyers organization. No word yet on when production will begin.

I am extremely conflicted about this project. On the one hand, I am not what you would call a Rob Zombie fan. More to the point, I think he's a terrible filmmaker and his butchering of 'Halloween' left a sour taste in my mouth. However, I love the idea of doing a movie about the Broad Street Bullies. Especially after seeing Michael Dowse's supremely funny 'Goon,' my desire for more violent hockey comedies has skyrocketed. The idea of every single member of the team being a scrappy, mean-spirited, but ultimately lovable bastard is more than a bit enticing. I just hope Zombie can do something other than make them all dirty trailer trash serial killers on skates. I will say that I'm happy he's stepping outside his typical wheelhouse and trying something new, maybe it's just what he needs to break himself of some of his unfortunate tropes.

What do you guys think? Can Zombie pull this off? Any hockey fans out there in Spill Land?

Slap shot was it! It's pretty much impossible to top Paul Newman skating on blood, I don't understand why people keep trying...

I love hockey, so I will be watching this. It's gonna be interesting to see if it's from the point of view of the players, management, or the coaches. Fred Shero would make an interesting character, as would any of the Flyers like Clarke, Leach, Barber, Parent, or even Dave "The Hammer" Schultz. The 1970s was an interesting decade for hockey. There was the tension of war, the on-ice and off-ice conflict with the Soviets, the two Summit-Series, the back-to-back Stanley Cup wins, etc.

I think if Rob Zombie wants a good story, he'll write about the Red Army game of 1976 in which the NHL's best team, the Philadelphia Flyers, went on to face the best team in the world, the Moscow Red Army, where the Flyers beat and beat up the Red Army both on the score board and on the ice.

I liked House of 1000 Corpses and The Devils Rejects.....then he desecrated Halloween back story and H2 was worse.I like the casting in his movies, for example bringing back Danielle Harris is pretty inspired for example. He just came off as a bit of a one trick pony and should have stuck to his own thing.

A hockey movie? Really? I live in Kanuckistan and I can't stand any of them other then Slapshot and even then once was enough.  Although the idea of a Mighty Ducks movie that takes place in a zombie redneck slaughterhouse might be ok I guess....

This might work...maybe he's a hockey fan.  Jay Baruchel and company really understood the game, as evidenced by how surprisingly good "Goon" was.

I think the producers had to coax to Rob into only adding 3000 uses of the word "fuck" instead of his usual 30000.

After the abomination that was Halloween and H2, their really gonna let him do another remake.

When I first saw this headline, I was expecting Rob Zombie to do a Mutant League Hockey movie.

@Mr.Dr.Button: True, but I think The Devil's Rejects is one of the best horror movies of this century.
