Ridley Scott Reveals Sole Connection Between 'Prometheus' And 'Alien'

When the first images for Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus' hit the web, showing what appeared to be the mysterious space jokey from 'Alien,' the connection to Scott's 1979 sci-fi masterpiece seemed clear-cut. But then screenwriter Damon Lindelof denied such connections in subsequent interviews. Then the trailer hit, using the exact same slow reveal of the letter segments in the title as did the 'Alien' trailer. So, what's up? Is 'Prometheus' an 'Alien' prequel or not? Luckily, in an interview published today, director Ridley Scott provided concrete evidence as to one definite connection between the two films. Apparently that link, according to Scott the only link, is the character played by Guy Pearce. Here's what Scott had to say...

"When the first Alien movie and Blade Runner were made, I thought that in the near future the world will be owned by large companies. This is why we have the Tyrell Corporation in Blade Runner, and Weyland-Yutani in Alien. They sent the Nostromo spaceship. The Prometheus is owned by an entrepreneur called Peter Weyland, and is played by Guy Pearce. That’s the connection between the two films, and nothing more. Prometheus is a new film, a new world, and is full of new ideas. And of course new monsters as well."

So there you have it, one tenuous connection between 'Alien' and 'Prometheus.' While I actually really like the idea of one of the voyagers in 'Prometheus' eventually becoming a founding member of the sinister Weyland-Yutani corporation, something still bothers me about this. I have no trouble believing Ridley Scott when he says that the Pearce connection is the only bridge between 'Alien' and 'Prometheus,' but if that's the case then it seems a bit shady for the 'Prometheus' trailer to wholesale lift gimmicks from that of the 'Alien' trailer. It seems like the film is being sold as much more of an 'Alien' prequel than it actually will be. Of course, this isn't the fault of the director or the writer so much as the studio's marketing team. And I'm not at all saying the film has to be a full-on 'Alien' prequel to be any good, actually quite the contrary. 'Prometheus' is probably better off not being so beholden to 'Alien.' Both Lindelof and Scott can explore entirely new worlds and new storylines if unencumbered by existing material.

Those are just my rusty two cents, what do you guys think?

Well, seeing as how the space jockey and his/her/its ship is in the trailer, we already know this is a wee bit of bullshit. There are other connections.

I think it's clear the studio was just trying to pimp Alien to sell this movie, which from the trailer looks a lot more weird than Alien....Although I love Alien, the idea was not original...just very well done

When things these days are retreads and best can hope for is skillful fan service, having it set on the same world/universe but exploring other things and themes is the best of best worlds.

@The Temp --- Actually it can't. When AVP came out it ignored the chronology and several facts from the original series. They tried to imply that the Synthetic Bishop was designed after the company founder who they named "Charles Bishop Weyland". The problem with this is that in Alien 3, we are introduced to the real Bishop, the guy who designed the Synthetic, and that was the year 2179. Almost 200 years after he supposedly died in that crap fest AVP.  Another reason we can tell Scott is ignoring the existence of the AVP films is that he HATES them. Proof of that is in his Comi-con response to being asked his opinion on them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TQLRMIGA2I. Peter Weyland is the founder of Weyland Enterprises; which eventually merges with the Yutani corporation.

I am excited for Prometheus, I just wish it was shot on Film and not the Epic

Fuck Ridley Scott anyway. I lost all of my remaining hope for this guy's soul after Kingdom of Heaven and then Robin Hood (which Spill declared Some ol' Bulls**t, remember?)

iT'S A FREAKIN' PREQUEL!!!! Still think it will be great though. And the term "new monsters" really gets me excited. Can't wait.

It's Ridley Scott with a great cast. I have faith that this will be one of the better movies of the year, prequel or not.
