For quite some time now, we've seen teaser posters and set images from the upcoming sci-fi actioner 'Riddick.' This was to be the third time actor Vin Diesel inhabited the character Riddick, a warrior from an alien race known as the Furyans. He had previously appeared in 'Pitch Black' and 'The Chronicles of Riddick.' We knew that in addition to Diesel, Karl Urban ('Dredd') would be returning as would director David Twohy. The big question that remained unanswered, however, is when the movie would actually be released. It seemed like production was nearly completed, but still no word on when it would hit theaters. Now, we have our answer. 'Riddick' is set to be released on September 6th, 2013.
As much as I wasn't a fan of 'The Chronicles of Riddick' when I first saw it, the 'Riddick' press materials that have leaked so far, mostly through Vin Diesel's Facebook page, have me anticipating the release of the third installment of this character's story. If nothing else, after seeing 'Dredd' and 'Red' I was quite pleased Karl Urban would be reprising his role as Vaako for 'Riddick.' The big concern with doing a movie like this is that 'The Chronicles of Riddick' wasn't exactly a smash hit, and that was nearly a decade ago. They are really going to have to do something unique and spectacular to get people into the theaters for this one. The good news is, as of right now, that weekend in September, the first after Labor Day, does not appear to have any other major releases so the competition is nonexistent at this point. If anything of note is announced for that weekend between now and then, expect 'Riddick' to relocate.
What do you guys think? Is the public interest still there or a Riddick movie? Are they wise to place themselves outside the summer blockbuster season?

Comment by I'm Batman on December 23, 2012 at 11:10pm Chronicles of Riddick is one of those films most don't like but rather enjoyed. It reminded me of those 80's B-Flick Sci Fi. It was great.

Comment by Maxou on December 19, 2012 at 9:36pm They finished shooting the movie at the end of 2011 or begining of 2012. The movie is in post-production now, might even be on a shelf somewhere in a pitch black room.
